Interviewing with VITAS

Hello. Can anyone provide information on selling hospice care, coming from pharma? I am currently interviewing with Vitas for a sales position. It seems like a good position overall, but wondering about the company culture, benefits, pressure for mgt, unrealistic goals....etc. Serious replies only please. I am genuinely interested in learning more about the company. Thanks in advance.

I just moved from pharma to VITAS recently. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros- Largest hospice with a good budget for access

Better job stability than pharma

Training is local and you have the opportunity to "shadow" other disciplines within the company.

For the most part, a business casual atmosphere.

Some of the case managers love the CE classes that you provide.

Cons- Very few perks (no credit cards for lunches, laptop is provided, but you are on your own for a printer)

Very competitive and a lot of cold calling. Access to decisions makers is pretty tough. It takes some time.

PTO system is used, but many reps work through holidays to get referrals sometimes. There are only a few recognized holidays by VITAS. 90 Day wait until benefits start.

Monthly referral quota is always over your head.

As opposed to pharma, staff is sometimes unprofessional(dress, etc.)

I hope this helps and best wishes!

Hospice is very competitive and occasionally frustrating, as you sometimes must deal with families that are not ready to accept the terminal nature of their loved one. Many people incorrectly view hospice as "giving up" or a service that hastens death. You might also expect some pushback from SNF nurses, who sometimes see hospice as infringing on their territory.

Ultimately very rewarding though. You'll end the day knowing you did good work, and coming from pharma you'll be shocked to see doctors that actually want to talk to you at length instead of "I only have time for a signature."

How much vacation time do you get the first year?
