Interviewing for a sales position with UHS

Are you currently employed? If so, run away as fast as you can.

Take the interview if your not. But keep pumping out the resumes even if you get the job. You'll want to make an exit as soon as you can.

Very bad, unless you enjoy being treated like crap.

Sound advice. I'll share my own opinions.

I've been an AE for a few years now. It didn't take long to realize I'd made the biggest blunder of my career by joining the company. I've stuck with it long enough to avoid the job hopper label but I'm starting to look. I think many AEs are doing the same.

I've never been employed by a company with less respect for its own sales force and less regard for our wellbeing. That attitude is reflected in our pay, our benefits, the vehicles we drive and the hours we have to work to keep up.

Our health coverage is a joke.

You will not receive a real car. You'll get a Toyota Prius instead. I hope you're not tall or large. You'll be expected to have a 1-800 How's My Driving sticker on the back. Nice, huh? The company frowns on personal use of the vehicle so don't plan on selling your own.

You will be buried with administrative tasks. You'll be in accounts during the day trying to find business or falling on the sword for service screw ups. You'll fill out forms late into the night and on the weekends. I really think there's a monthly contest in MN to see who can create the most busy work.

You will be kept running in circles because management can't provide consistent longterm direction and can't maintain a strategic partnership.

You will never make any serious money here. A huge amount of management time is devoted to making sure of that. You'll be lucky to hit $75K. Your income will be at the mercy of unmotivated service personnel. Be sure to ask about next year's compensation plan. We're hearing a manager will soon be able to hold back a large portion of commission depending on how well your forms were filled out during the month.

Always watch your back. Don't trust anyone.

The economy sucks and this is at least a job if you need a job. Otherwise, I'd steer clear.

Good luck!

OMG, its true! Our DSD told us yesterday that 50% of commission can be withheld based on CIS and territory plans. Downs told us he doesn't agree with the 2012 comp plan and will never hold back any money but I don't trust this company. Oy vey!

I must respond to you both- first to the new person who said that Downs doesn't agree with the plan and will never withhold money.....this is simply not the case. It might be that you are not familiar with him or or his style. He is one of the most respected managers in the company because he is fair and his direct reports love him. He did NOT say that he disagreed with the plan, but that there was huge upside......! He also said that he did not anticipate that he would have to withhold any of the other 50%. He has a very tenured team so we all know that means to stay on top of your paperwork, business etc and he will never have to go there. You can and should trust UHS. If there is one person you CAN trust it is Downs, so don't judge too quickly or let disgruntled people like the one who responded to you , influence your opinion.

Second, to the AE that has been with UHS for 3 years and is unhappy....dude, life is too short , so I suggest that you move on and let the rest of us grow the company. This company is growing and changing. It you don't like it, move on. Every year is a new challenge , so either embrace it or find something you love. No sales job is perfect. Having been with uhs longer than you, I can say that each year has it's challenges, but the leadership and direction is very positive.

of the company is positive.

Research their own website's financials. They have a Net loss year after year. I would look at other opportunities first. Of course it's a little better than being unemployed.

Depends....
Do you like being held accountable? If so, then you would probably like the job.
If you don't then you probably won't last long.

I think the comp plan will change for 2013 to better incentivize AE's. Average at best AE's will be booted within the next 6 months. UHS is moving towards a sales organization focus.

Accountability. What a great idea!

Perhaps we could have avoided our current financial woes if we'd adopted a sales organization focus much earlier.

So, who is responsible for our existing business model? Who is responsible for having us out of focus, so to speak?

I would suggest the responsible party is our CEO who has been at the helm since 2002.

How is Gary being held accountable?

Singer is the one responsible for the sales force being so unfocused. Don't get me wrong, Singer is great, but does not have the tenacious sales attitude that every other sales division in the country has. Gary is being held accountable by his wife. She is not going to be happy when he does not reach his bonus to allow ~$1M in bonus coming in. The value of the company is not where any of the executives want so the true value will not be where they want to allow a recap.

So it's not the Gary & Rex show anymore. Enter Bill and its the move or boot philosophy. They would like to go with an IPO except UHS currently can't stand the sox microscope with their "balance sheet". Look for more sales people to leave as better job ops come in the medical field.

No argument that Singer sucked as SVP Sales. Serious case of adult ADD. Let's not forget who promoted an inexperienced Singer into the job. That would be our bumbling, micromanaging CEO.

The blame for our problems lies with Gary. He needs to go away.

UHS can't go public with our junk bond status and high leverage. Sales will leave because they will not like being held accountable, similar to what ops went through 4 years ago with Kuck. Some will leave because elf unreasonable expectations. The new sales management is hopeless, they only care about top line revenue, not the expenses associated with that business.
Expect UHS to start its downward spiral into mediocrity.
