I'm So Scared

I'm an employee at HQ. A support person. I support my husband who lost his job (Vertex about 9 months ago). I am very nervous. I feel like I cannot talk to anybody. I feel like NO ONE cares. WE NEED THIS JOB! WE NEED THIS MONEY. I have been a loyal employee for over 12 years and have received many, many praises and "awards" (no stock options or anything like that- do people get those things?). I just need some answers but am afraid that I will be asked to leave the company next week or the week after. What happened?

ALL things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28. It is hard to believe at times, but you must hold on to this promise. It doesn't say some things work together, or once in a while things work together....it says ALL THINGS. Keep this in your heart and repeat the verse to yourself over and over. It is what gets me through the day. I'm praying for you and your family. I'm in the field, and we are scared too.

Just so you know, having a history of performance awards doesn't insulate you from being targeted for elimination, neither does having been awarded stock options in conjunction with performance notifications as verification of contributions made to the company's success. A history of being a sycophant or a yes man/woman is often a big factor in being retained simply because the targets of sycophancy do the "assessments" that determines who are targeted for lay off. This is why you see so much talk here about fear and retribution. The people with the power will take care of and protect their favorites regardless of their competency or actual performance. So in that sense it may be beyond your control or rationalization. Also the way, stock options work, at least at the level of the typical employee, I can tell you from personal experience that once they decide to lay you off, some of those options and restricted stock go away and some get accelerated and shortened vesting so that they expire sooner and become worthless.

IN the same situation, my Spouse passed away a few years and I have 2 kids to support. I am in the 50 year older but not old enough to retire group, I am NOT in the director's "click" of favorites as I speak my opinion.

What I recommend is plan for the worst and hope for the best.

See what you can cut out of your expenses right now, can you cut cable or phone by switching to another service, or call them up and see if you can get them to lower your current payments some way.

See if it is feasible to re-mortgage your house if you have one, to lower the payments.

Talk to a financial advisor about how you can adjust your income/expenses.

On the job side start looking now, get your resume up to date and start networking. start looking on the net at the positions out there, you may discover a better position!

This isn't the last set of layoffs this company is going to do, it is going to keep cutting and cutting. As the current so-called management will not take responsibility for their lack of leadership. So the rest of us are going to take the brunt of heat for their ineptness.

Regardless of how many years you have left on your mortgage prior to being let go, if you think you will will need the financial breathing room, the time to refinance is sometime between the time you get your walking papers in the blue folder and the day you are escorted to the gate. During that time the mortgage company won't ask any questions. If you wait until after you've done the brown box walk they may not want to even talk to you. Also, bear in mind that you might be competing with 1000s of others at the same time to sell your house so don't expect it to move quickly if you find something that requires relocation. If you refi you might be able to handle two house payments at the same time until the first sells.

The "escort to the gate with personal belongings in hand" thing is particularly demeaning given that everyone you walk by knows why you have all your stuff with you and why you are being escorted. Not exactly the "treat employees with dignity and respect" line that they parroted before issuing the walking papers.

Wow, I'm so impressed with the positivity of the posters on this thread! I've never posted a message, only read the posts to get a sense of what's happening in the company, but feel compelled to say that I wish you all the best. Yes, keep the faith - I am! Depending on what happens, while one door may be closed, another will be opened.

With all the nonsense that goes on here, there is no mistaking the fact that Vertex has really done a lot of people wrong, and ruined many lives.

I don't pretend to know the answers but I have been there as well, and anyone who thinks they will never be in this position are dead wrong. It sucks, it hurts, and sometimes good people get caught up in this.

Well said.. The only people well taken care of at vertex is Sr. Management. Those of us who do all the work get screwed over while they cash in on hundreds of thousands

Thankyou so much for your concern. I am in so much stress.

I remember someone putting this post up. I like the "God 3 answers to all prayers"

Just stuck in my head I guess.

WOW, You keep it up I will tell your parents your using their computer. I am the writer of this thread even though someone else put it in as a topic. This is the first time in a while since I have been called a dummy and no one has ever called me a knucklehead. My secretary called me saucy last month. She is 64 years old and I had no clue what it meant. I went to dictionary.com to help me with that one. She is wonderful and puts me in my place when I act up or start cursing at other executives . Don't be angry at a company, nothing good will come out of it and it burns unnecessary cycles that could be used for something else. If you are not being treated with the respect you deserve, find another company that will. Don't limit yourself to pharmaceuticals. If you are good at selling and building relationships, your expertise and experience would allow you to sell anything or move into marketing. If your a chemist and have a good foundation in knowledge, use that to find a totally different field of work if you like. Is it scary? Yes, but at the end of the day you will be happier because you feel like your doing something more than making a paycheck. I will never be on this website again, the only reason for it was the 3 new employees from Vertex told me about it. I wanted to see it for myself and I was bored as hell today at work. I am not a religious person (hadn't been to church in 10 years) but I have a great plaque someone gave me. It states:
God 3 answers to all prayers :
1. yes
2. not yet
3. I have something better in mind.

As far as 3 goes, I wish he would fill me in at times.

Good luck and remember that there is a great deal of talent at Vertex. If they let it go, many companies would be happy to take you in. You just have to go out and find them. Use linkedin, head hunters and other sites. I believe head hunters are now called talent acquisition specialist.

cheers

All these decisions are just business ( outsourced) accounting bean counters seeing souls as just data points on a spread sheet. Just wanting to help give you expectations and toughen your skin.

If it does happen=== Vertex has one of the best separation packages in the entire corporate world. If you as you say are in tough financial straits=== make the most of it. Most company's severance are zero to none.

Take any posts here on CP lightly and go direct to Vertex for any questions you have. Most of the information posted here is sarcastic or very misinformed.

I wish you the best and hope you are not affected. Good luck.

How pathetic. You not only post the exact same original post as you posted on the Merck board (yes I've seen it on page 2 of the Merck board) but then you actually cut and paste and post the exact same replies too? You have some serious issues and need to get a life. Troll.

So sorry you have to endure this stress. Hang in there. The thing that always gets me through is faith. May God bless you and your family beyond measure. Praying for us all to get through this awful time.
