If you were to leave, where would you go?

What biotech's are hot nowadays ? It seems EVERY biotech/pharmaceutical company on CP have people bitching and warning NOT to worth at their companies or interview. So, how do you know what company is worth pursuing versus "big pharma douchey's" that micromanage your ass, pay crap bonuses and treat their employees like shit.

What's your ideal company to work for ? Merck, Pfizer, Gilliad, Millennium, Genentech, Amgen, Medicine's Company, Actavis...

Curious. If every company out there sucks and treats their employees like shit, who doesn't?

That is a great question. If you listen to any of the fear mongers on CP then the answer is they are all terrible. In reality, for what we do and the money we make the answer is any pharma job out there is good if you can keep your base salary at 115k +. Think about it, we generally make a minimum of about $150,000 per year, have all of our expenses paid for, and work out of our homes.

If you go small biotech then expect a great culture, great pay, and a bumpy ride. benefits can range from poor to great. Risk of acquisition, turnover among management, and loss of job stability is high. Also, the culture is likely to change for the worse over time. For this opportunity the fear monger says: "if the start-up does well worry about getting bought" "if the company does poorly worry about getting bought or laid off"

Large pharma including Pfizer, Merck, Actavis, and Amgen, Gilead, and Abbvie, generally have decent pay. Salaries in the specialty areas of these companies can be 100K + and most are actually paying salaries that are competitive with the biotech companies. Expect to see base salaries in the 115K range for experienced reps. Risk of acquisition is lower here but risk of re-organization or "optimization" is high with the larger companies. Culture is generally big pharma but considering we work alone 90% of the time it's not a big deal.
Fear monger says: "it's big pharma and the base salaries are only 70k, you will have a roommate" ask around and you'll find that the salaries are indeed very competitive and the specialty divisions of these companies do not have roommates. Merck does not have roommates.

And finally the short answer is Regeneron will be hiring for an expansion very soon.

So....Would you stay with Merck if they offered you a job? Pension is very attractive too.

That would depend on the amount of severance you are walking away from and how much equity you had. If you are here a year or so then I would definitely stay. And I don't think Merck is giving pensions anymore, the existing employees are grandfathered in but new employees are not eligible.

Not true. Just got off the phone with a bud of mine that works with Merck and has for 20 years. His pension is awesome but the new pension he said won't be as lucrative but its still a nice pension especially when many companies don't offer any at all

I would take the pension out of the equation most here are 40 yrs old plus, LOTS of 50 year olds as well, do you plan on working another 20-30 years? If you have equity and very little debt this may be the time to take one last risk. I think of it like an athlete on his last big contract do you take more money or give a hometown discount?

Good point.

Hey, I'm 43. About to get about $400k on the deal. And yeah, If Merck wants me, I'd take a pension. Never worked for a place that had one. Nice deal all around.

I've never seen such bullshit on Cafe pharma in my life!!! 400K?!?!?!?! you've got balls my friend!!!! Also your pension will be paid in monthly ass fuc$ings. Enjoy your pension!!!

You could probably get another biotech job and make more than the pension is offering you between now and when you retire if you play your cards right. Tuck that money away and VOILA. Instant pension. Pensions to me are for people who don't manage their money well.
