I would be scared to ask that question personally. They may say no and you get treated poorly when you keep your position.

If I had another job lined up, I would ask for it. Otherwise, you get stuck with a job that someone else could have had and no severance package. I say take the chance and worse case you still end up with two jobs. Base case you end up with one job and a severance package.
