I love it when Merck lays off another round!!

I left Merck just after Vioxx was 'voluntarily' pulled from the market back in 2004. As a long time Merckie people thought I was crazy at the time - "What about your pension?", "What about your stock options?" (worthless at that time). About a year after I left the lay offs started and haven't stopped since. Each round just produces more unemployed suckers with an even worse package.

Once Merck was the standard for integrity and ethics in the industry. Merck used to look after its employees like no other company in the industry or any other for that matter (remember when we won "Fortune's most admired company" seven years in a row). My friends, those days are long, long gone.

I have lunch about once a week with people from Merck who say that they are about to leave or that they are 'bridged to retirement' (another con - you still need a job for 10 - 15 years). But invariably these folks hold on to long until they're kicked out of the door.

Face it folks - in this economy the only job security is finding another job....so stop making excuses and leave on your own terms. I did and have never been happier or more successful!! Good luck!!!

Amen Brother! I'm with you and happy to observe this mess in my rearview mirror.

Great post...I have posted many times on CP similar sentiments...Glad I left on my own terms...Merck is a con...A toxic hellhole, and yet, people say all the time, "I can't leave."

I left in my 50s, with no spouse as a second income. Yes, I was no longer dining at fine steakhouses, and the annual jaunts to Europe became a thing of the past...

But I got free of the ugly cult (Ponzi Scheme) Merck, and life suddenly became much more optimistic...

FU MERCK!

Retired 4 years ago after almost three decades. No more fancy trips but still one or two trips here and there. No fancy dining paid by Merck but still dine out at those places on special occasions. Got a call from one of those greedy docs the other day and was so happy to say, "You got the wrong number."

We hope you die a horrible death from cancer. Amen!

Total BS post. Until you tell us your golden rainbow job we know how phony a post you are....no glee in unemployment, Ponzi man.

We hope you die a horrible death from cancer. Amen!

Original OP. Nope - no cancer - just started my own company after leaving Merck, sold it for a good sum and now do my own thing. No sure why you're so defensive/angry but you sound a little like those suckers who don't have the balls to leave on their own terms.

You have to remember that top management is incentivized and makes money by downsizing the organization - both the Board and Wall Street reward the CEO and his cronies for such actions so it will continue ad infinitum. Especially whilst you have a lawyer in charge who has little to no basic business experience or instincts. You'll just see 'save you way to prosperity' tactics and actions - not investment in new ventures.

In addition mergers are never the product of strong companies - only weak ones. It's management's way of hiding the fact that they can't manage the core business. Its a 'wag the tail' strategy that throws up a smokescreen for years whilst they sort out 'the integration and efficiency gains' (both are fictitious). In reality what happens is that the business continues to tank and lay offs increase exponentially. I've yet to see a truly successful merger in the pharma industry.

As a retiree I don't understand why the OP continued to have lunch with Merck people to hear their sad stories.

If to solicit business for his new venture then I can understand.

Otherwise I don't.

There are so many fun hobbies to pursue, new friendships to be made, and whatever else to explore post-Merck. I don't want to make fun of my former colleagues who are still with Merck. I also don't need to hear their latest horror stories to reinforce my decision to say goodbye to Mother was the right one.

Sorry you think it is BS cochise...It is not...and there was no golden rainbow job for me after Merck so there...I scrape by, and have no health insurance...I sold my car and use a Honda 250 held together with duct tape to get around....

the point of my posting, is that being poor, still (for me anyway) beats being a highly paid professional nag and liar, for a corrupt snake oil company like Merck..

Guess you will never have enough integrity to see it that way...Now go order tomorrow's Panera Bread order for your RFM wheelie-bag boy...
