Secured a role in a real sales environment and have pathways to promotion in 6 figures and bonus. This industry is a joke. I did it for a moment but understand this in 2022 if your only experience is pharma (young person or old), you will have a hard time finding another job that pays you anything close to this. And this pay is a joke (unless biotech or specialty, which most of you are not
), so if you think it's a lot then you are in for a wake-up during a layoff and can't get a contract role quickly.
I laugh as you all sweat the next ride along as your access dwindles and the caterer you used has a delay in your lunch and that pisses off all your MAs. LMAO GOOD LUCK (AND IN PRIMARY CARE NO LESS.)
I tried leaving Pharma after my first layoff 8 years ago, and took a job as a Financial Sales Representative at a bank. My job was to open checking & savings accounts, and get customers to apply for credit cards, and home equity loans; I even got licensed to sell annuities.
I thought this would provide me a more stable, term career option with less day to day pressure -it wasn’t..Not only was the salary less than half of what a “low” Pharma salary is, the pressure of selling was just as high, if not higher, and I was stuck behind a desk all day working 8:30 to 5, Monday - Friday! To earn commissions, I had to accumulate 25,000 points per quarter; I would earn 50 points for every checking account, 75 for Savings, 150 for credit cards, and 500 points for a Home equity loan…If I hit the 25,000 benchmark, I would earn a whopping $1,500…So, basically, I could sell a 30 year, $75,000 Home Equity loan at 6.5% APR, and the bank makes over double the amount on the loan, and I get 500 points…Needless to say, I jumped back to Pharma when I got the opportunity.
A few years later, after another layoff, I tried to go into the insurance sales business..No pressure at all from management to sell because I was a commission only agent, but still a lot of pressure because you have to sell to make any money at all, and no benefits, car, gas card, etc…I did really well for a new agent; I sold over $175K in new premium which netted me about $60k with a lot of wear & tear on my vehicle, and of course my wife had to add me to her insurance which increased her premiums exponentially. So, after a year of that, I jumped back to Pharma.
So, here I am, and I’ll stay here because there is pressure, and uncertainty everywhere in every business, and I’d rather have the relatively high-paying/compensation (using an hourly wage equation) & great benefits, and I’ll gladly take the uncertainty that comes along with it.
Maybe you will succeed at your Real Estate endeavor, and if so, congratulations to you!
