While I don't doubt that much if perhaps not all of this is true, I am somewhat perplexed that this piece came from aljezeera.net. A news organization with questionable motives towards the west.
The bottom line is that we all have the option to not do the wrong thing. I will admit that we walked a fine line during the 90's and in early 2000 before things began to change. There were "winks" and "suggestions" from DM's as to things that were "ok." I don't believe I was ever forced or coerced into doing something blatantly wrong. In the Aredia days when the only indication was hypercalcemia of malignancy there was constant talk of Paget's disease and bone mets at all meetings by managers at all levels. I recall a conference call where where these potential but as yet not approved indications were discussed, a DM said, "I'm not telling you guys to sell off label." I noted that he "was not telling us not to." The topic was dropped.
What really needs to be done is to hang the perpetrator, the genesis of the problem along with fining the company substantially. Instead what appears to happen is that Joe Blow makes big money, promotions, stock options and the like. When the wheels come off the company pays a fine and everyone goes on their merry way all the richer. When individuals start spending a few years in the round bar hotel and become the ugly girl at the big dance on Saturday night, things will change, not until.
(Looks like it might be a good day to fly)
Never let the bastards get you down.
