How to be an Independent Contractor

Without being complete a**holes, can someone help me understand what it is to be an ISR and how to do it. I know it sounds dumb, but I have a medical device background, but have always been a direct W2 employee. I am thinking about making the change to becoming an independent contractor and wanted to learn more. Do you just pick lines that you are comfortable with selling, if you have contacts in that niche already? Are there any ISR's out there, when they started, were selling into brand new accounts? Did you waltz in there and say, "hey, I have a product that you guys might benefit from". My background was orthopedic device sales, but non-spinal. Worked mostly with sports med docs, podiatrists, and ortho surgeons. Just trying to get the gist of the whole ISR world. Are you competing against direct reps from the big med. device companies as well?

You don't have what it takes. Go back to your comfort zone and your little 401k and expense account and be sure to be home by 3 to wait for Charlie to get off the bus.

Short version on this is "you eat what ya kill". I would not advise you in this market to just jump out there as a 1099 with no support or reputation.
Hospitals are TOTALLY slamming the doors on new companies and rookie reps. You really need to maybe get in with an independent agency to show the ropes.
Be prepared to make NO money for 9 months to a year as a true independent. Also an independent agency isn't Santa claus, they won't pay you to " try this out" to see if you like it.
 






Why don't you guys act a little more professional and help the OP out? Are you guys as unprofessional out in the field as you are on this board? Geeeez... First of all, ANYONE can make it as a 1099 in medical sales IF they have good products. Selling is selling, period. I have done it and can prove it to anyone. Yes, you won't get paid right away and depending on your call points, you may not get in early but it beats getting a free ride from our wonderful government, NOT! Research companies looking for 1009s, territories, and make some contacts. It is really not that hard. If you are a go-getter then get out there and look. This business is all about being creative. Always best to stick to areas you have expertise in already (cardio, ortho, derm). YOU make it happen. It is a great opportunity but you need to be patient. The best part, nobody tells you what you can make...there is no ceiling on earnings if you have good products and are out there everyday making it happen. I know, I thought about it just like you and it is working out very well. Good luck!
 






Thanks for optimistic post. I know it's do-able, just wanted to see how you guys started out. I'm hungry and a go-getter, however I didn't know how it was going up against the big companies and if the docs gave the indie reps any chance since they were used to using the major name brand stuff. I'm doing some research now of companies and distributors in my area. Thanks again.
