Hey people...(yes, you the sales force)

don't you see what Merck is doing? don't you see how this pharmaceutical sales job is eating away at your soul and eroding your self esteem and confidence?

Merck is tightening the noose...It is a calulated effort to get rid of as many reps as possible without having to pay severance etc...

Stratifying people into groups?? (S1, S2, S3 etc.) That is sort of like what the Na&*is did in the concentration camps in Germany...(of course, makes sense, Merck's origins are from the Fatherland.) Competencies?? wtf?? who the heck is judging the competencies of the managment group that drove this company off of a cliff??

it is a brave new world at Merck...get out while u can...

Have the RDs directed CTMs to take casualties yet? You know - the good reps that all of a sudden "suck?"

give me a fucking break. you can be a victim if and only if you choose to be. if you don't like the gig get out and find something you do like. the skills that were necessary in the old model are not going to cut it anymore, you can't show up and regurgitate some pre-programmed message that was spoon fed to you. There actually are some skills and some interest in what customers are doing and what their challenges are that is now necessary. Those of you who have slapped on your suit and dumped a bunch of samples all day while chatting up the front office cows need to dig a bit deeper and actually start to understand whats going on the offices. Otherwise you can go fill out an application at Target. If you show a bit of interest and initiative, you can have this job for a while becuase you will rise to the top and you don't have to screw anyone to do it, just be interested. I don't understand why everyone thinks Merck owes them something for nothing. You have one of the better paying jobs out there right now, whats the fucking problem whiners? No one is forcing you to be here.

right on and I could not agree more. this job used to be a robot job, but now it actually does require some thought and its alot more interesting if you have a manager who supports that kind of mindset. I think one thing managers are starting to understand is that because the environment is much more difficult, it takes alot more creativity on our part of be relevant. We have to think differently rather than not think at all, and I for one, happen to be very glad about that because i no longer have to do the "dr, for all you blah blah blah programmed bullshit speech" and I can actually have a conversation about what is going on in their world and then when I actually have something new and important and relevant, they trust me enough to listen. Its more fun if you make it that way. Mangers who are still in the show up and throw up mind set are going to go down the tubes, simple as that.

You people are delusional. This party is almost over. Don't pretend we aren't all pawns waiting to be swept off the board. If you think this is a meaningful position can you explain to me what a good career path looks like at Merck now?

i am not a pawn, I am not waiting to be swept off the board, I actually like my job, its challenging as hell (I am not a rep) and there are many career paths -- true that there are far fewer than in the past, but good people are getting opportunities, whether its special assignments that turn in to promotions or applying for (before the freeze) and getting promotions. No one is claiming its a cake walk or things are great. They are not, the company is and has been struggling and probably will be struggling for a while - I think until they get rid of much of the current leadership and really start to change the culture things may continue to be tight, but even though all doors are not wide open right now, all doors are not closed either. You just have to work (network) a lot harder. But people are doing it. You also have to be willing to move - sometimes to bumfuked somewhere. No one said it was going to be handed to you on a silver platter, but trust me, its possible to move up even in this environment. If you are waiting for someone to offer you something out of the blue, don't hold your breath, but if you know what you want your next step to be and you start meeting people and networking, you can probably make something happen.

I think this person came up with the recipe to the Merck Kool Aid.

It is very possible to move up in this organization. There are scores of ass-kissing incompetents that are doing that on a regular basis. And there will continue to be work - just like there is work in and around any train wreck. But there is far more about Merck that is denigrating than there is that is uplifting. For any young person, the odds are good that Merck is likely a waste of their youth or their ethics.

There is nothing this company can bring to a PCP office that other pharma companies can't do better, absolutely nothing

The OP is right on the money. In essence, he's saying that the Merck ship is sinking and management is purposely making life miserable (for the expensive reps in particular), all in an effort to avoid severance, which will be getting worse and worse in the coming layoffs. If you haven't noticed the pressure placed on formerly great reps, then your head is squarely embedded in your ass. Overnight, droves of great reps suddenly suck. That didn't happen 15 or 20 years ago at Merck. Recently, it happens regularly. Accept it; the company is in trouble and they're doing what every other company in trouble has done---they're screwing the sales force.

As for you morons who espouse the relevance of the "new" Merck, you are beyond anyone's ability to fix. You are ass-kissing UPS drivers whose days are numbered. It's a lesson even the stupidest of you will soon learn.

The OP is correct-----get out when you can. You moron Merck ass-kissers: no one wants you. You're stuck until you also get canned. Don't feel bad; you're too stupid to realize that everyone is at risk, no matter how well you deliver those little boxes. And you're also too stupid to realize how pathetic this job has become.

Its the non-salesman types who win in doc sales.....nuance types who come across as slick, plastic salesmen lose. We had a sales expert on our team who never could get it about selling to docs, then a former RN joined our team. She understood treating patients. Long story short, she repaired a lot of problems.

you know what, then get the fuck out if you don't like it. I got news for you, you have choices. Stop pissing and moaning and go get another job.

To others, it may not be so easy to leave as your think. There are many who have so much time vested in this company. Is it really smart to just jump off the ship? Many joined this company when it was strong, one of the finest pharmaceutical companies and rated as one of the best sales teams by our customers. It is very sad that this is no longer the case. If you don't understand the magnitude of this, you are plain stupid or a kid yourself. You now have nothing special that others don't have. In fact, your customers only know how much you have lost. Your place in the market, well...............major changes must be coming your way with singulair and lipitor going generic. Hold on, it is going to be a bumpy ride.

You do have to think like that when you are one step above the reps, mortgage under water, way too many toys and gadgets bought on credit, wife depending on your income or will leave, bought an expensive family car, and trapped. Or you will go nus and other jobs will not pay as much. Rationalize and support Crazy Mother or go insane.

No, wait for the severance and then go do something more worthwhile. It was nice that Merck paid me what they did last year to take a couple of nice trips and then get a better job! Don't listen to the Kool Aid drinkers. They suck!

this person gets it...I am totally amazed that their are people defending this job, and saying that they are not pawns...you have to have such a low level of awareness, (that means clueless for you slow, Kool Aid Drinker types) to not see what is going on here...How anyone can defend this incredibly silly, outdated job is beyond me...Stay at your own risk...And by the way, for all of you who just want to wait around until the next mass layoff...chances are you will lose your mind before that, or be pushed out because you suddenly can do nothing right, according to our crack managment team...

Come on my friend, you'll go crazy and insane either way. Get your ass out of debt asap, if your wife loves you she'll support you. If she doesn't, well, you know...in the end, to restore your sanity you have to escape the madness that is Merck.

So true. Wonder how marriages Merck has indirectly ruined?

The Americans and Japanese decided to engage in a boat race. Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance levels. On the big day they felt ready. The Japanese won by a mile. The American team was discouraged by the loss. Morale sagged. Corporate management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found, so a consulting firm was hired to investigate the problem and recommend corrective action. The consultant’s finding: The Japanese team had eight people rowing and one person steering: the American team had one person rowing and eight people steering. After a year of study and millions spent analyzing the problem, the consultant firm concluded that too many people were steering and not enough were rowing on the American team. So as race day neared again the following year, the American’s team management structure was completely reorganized. The new structure: four steering managers, three area steering managers, and a new performance review system for the person rowing the boat to provide work incentive. The next year, the Japanese won by TWO miles! Humiliated, the American corporation laid off the rower for poor performance and gave the managers a bonus for discovering the problem.
