How is the age discrimination these days?

Are you still a geezer when you hit 40?

It appears that way at first glance. It’s possible that employees over 40 aren’t willing to “suck up” and constantly schedule 1 on 1’s with mentors and sponsors like “younger” employees. I assume this is because “older” employees are confident in their work and believe it should be able to “stand on it’s own” regarding promotions. Unfortunately, “sponsors/mentors” are critically important for advancement in addition to delivering good results.

So you are “just playing the game’ you really aren’t doing this to better yourself! You are doing it to better your position. This means you aren’t authentic, nor do you bring your “true self” to work. You’re the kind of person we hate!

Maybe it's less a matter of being willing to "suck up", and more a matter of priorities. Maybe they are too busy teaching less experienced people how to be proficient in their day jobs. This is not criticism, we all were less experienced at one time and needed good teachers, but the teaching is not valued. It amazes me how often the people we flag as "high potential" get unsolicited invitations from "sponsors/mentors", but there is no mention of who is actually showing them the ropes.

Call it what you will: motivation, suck-up, or teaching. The fact of the matter is that oftentimes "older" employees are taken advantage of in that executive management decides who is on the "fast track" never minding that they may have no experience in whatever position they are assigned to. Therefore, the "older" employees have to train their peers because the management can't do it! From experience, I can also tell you that the "older" employees are assigned to "train" their replacements. Off with their heads!

Very true.

This post made me laugh. Yes, experienced reps at lilly are not interested in mentoring and sponsorship. They are interested in selling. After all we are sales reps. But then again lilly pays poorly in bonuses.
As someone who was at lilly for many years, so glad I am not there anymore. I am at a company that values experience and where numbers and performance count. These new interns at lilly and younger people they are hiring could never perform elsewhere.

Are you still a geezer when you hit 40?
No absolutely not…the age for a geezer, is actually 48 and it is dependent on multi factors. SUCH AS….Are you female, or male… Are you Woke, …. Are you any good, can you sell,…Do you create problems for your manager or do you help solve issues…. In other words Are you a pain in the Ass. These are factors that determine if you are a geezer after 48, and once you hit 52, you can throw all the above personal traits out because you are definitely a geezer…. then all I will say to you from personal experience, is Adios…

Lots of truth in this post, although when you are above a certain age the Wokeness doesn't matter much, whatever that means. Your value as a free agent is your skill set and experience.

This is more for the home office folks -- but start plotting your exit in your early 40's. Keep your skills current, plan financially as if there is no pension, and set a hard deadline to leave before you turn 46-47. You need to show you can be successful for at least 1 other company before you are 50, otherwise you are probably stuck and few companies will look at you. There is good reason for this, because Lilly has a reputation of being very insular. If you're staying into your 50's because of the pension, that is your choice, but companies will think (not say) you haven't planned very well. So many have ditched their pensions by now that it is a foreign concept to most... they won't understand.

I was 3.5 years away from 80 points and left for this very reason. Only thing I'd change is not waiting so long and cutting it so close. But haven't regretted it for a minute.

Are you still a geezer when you hit 40?

age discrimination is alive and well in Corporate America and probably about 80 % of companies out there.

If you are in your 20s, save every penny. Don't invest until you have at least 50K in cash, for an emergency (because chances are you will get downsized) and you will need to have a back-up when a company screws you, and they surely will because they don't care about you. they lack integrity).

Also, get into a management role as soon as you can because companies like to structure themselves by setting up ownership/management vs. the employees. If you are in management, you will still be treating like crap, but not nearly as bad as an employee.

Also, don't make any big purchase (a house is what I am thinking) unless you have 20% down, and another 20% in the bank to get to that will help you when you get downsized.

Lastly, don't panic when things go bad. They surely will because we live in a predatory world, a world where people are doing their best to get your resources (your money). Instead, take it easy at work and slow down. Show up and look busy at all times, but don't work hard. Work smart and controlled, like a snail.

Those of you that don't appreciate this post are in a terrible line of thinking or have not been shafted like the rest of us. So, read this again if you want to learn and grow. I am a realistic person that wants what is best for others. I post this not to discourage you, rather to help you become more aware of the sociopaths that surround you in everyday life. And those losers are everywhere in this industry, unfortunately.

Holy FvckIf you’re new or experienced then you should follow the advice in the post. This is exactly how you can live somewhat worry free as a pharma rep.

And I agree with not going over board on how you work. The pay off isn’t worth it anyway. Just look busy, be agreeable & easy to work with. Then you’ll be golden and stay off the radar

Yes, all very good advice. Don't become the frog in the pot.

But a small twist for those who are not reps, especially the home office people. If you want to go over board on how you work (your choice), be selective. Invest your extra time & effort in things that strategically build your resume. Then have a plan to take it somewhere where the payoff is worth it. Otherwise Lilly will keep taking until they decide you are no longer useful, by then it is usually too late.

This thread is funny. If there are 22-early 30's, apply here. Especially in primary care. Your chances of getting hired are excellent! They do not want anyone with experience! It's all about going with the young, inexperienced, "new face" in offices, so they don't have to pay you mentality.

. This person has it all wrong. The young people today will and need to carry the torch. These people are our future. Who need or want to listen to the old farts., anyway..The youth of today are smart and will succeed if they just quit taking so many vacation days.

To me, not so bad having to train the young ones. At least we may have a chance at preserving our stock value if we can teach them what we know will work. Plus, it's so easy to tell who has potential when you are "training" the new person. Cannot keep everyone, have stock goals to meet.
