The best way to define leadership can be elusive depending on what you read and whom you ask. There is not one specific definition because leadership can have a different meaning for different people. In my opinion, leadership is the ability to provide direction, facilitate structure to reach goals, and empower people to the right destination to accomplish common goals. I believe that anyone can aspire to be a great leader but only those that understand that effective leadership requires an inward perspective, as well as the ability to recognize your authentic tendencies, strengths, and use these into the way you interact, communicate and influence others.
Personal Experience
Early in my career as a medical technologist, I witnessed a new manager effectively handle a conflict with a disgruntled subordinate. The manager was trying to resolve an issue with a critical piece of equipment without delay in patient testing, so it required everyone to work together. But, I recall that one particular co-worker was questioning every decision made by the manager. This new manager responded nicely but firmly said, "I am happy to discuss the reasons why with you later, but at this moment we need your help without question to get this issue resolved." I recalled being fascinated by the manager’s leadership approach and admired how she handled the situation with confidence, charisma, and purpose. This single experience made a lasting impression on how authentic leadership can manage a difficult situation effectively.
Traits of Authentic Leader
An authentic leader embodies specific traits which are a direct reflection of their strong beliefs and core values. “Authentic leadership is built on your character, not your style” (George, 2015). They lead with their heart; their natural ability to connect with people gives them a major advantage to developing and sustaining strong professional relationships. Authentic leaders know their purpose and are able to continuously learn and grow through their leadership experiences.
Leadership Exercises
Leadership exercises are a great tool to apply in developing the skills and habits of an authentic leader. One such leadership exercise is to think about your purpose; identify the components; make sure to include any specific “thoughts, impressions and truths” that you have learned through your life and career (Bussella, 2016). Next, you will finish the statement, “The purpose of my leadership is too.” Also, write down examples of future experiences that will allow you to fulfill your true purpose, and determine if there is anything you need to adjust present day so that you are living in alignment with your purpose (Bussella, 2016). This simple leadership exercise will remind you of your real purpose by showing you where you started, how far you have come and where you need to grow as an authentic leader.
Conclusion
To become an authentic health care leader, you must do the necessary inner work, have a strong moral foundation based on your beliefs and core values, and continuously develop your leadership skills by taking on challenging experiences and practicing leadership exercises. It is vital to regularly practice leadership exercises because they will identify which leadership approaches are working well and which ones need improvement. The mindset of an authentic leader will inspire greatness by leading from the heart, and empower those around them to reach their full potential so they can grow into an authentic leader.
