Leadership can be described as a way in which someone influences or guides followers. It is the art of getting people involved and motivated in achieving common goals. Being a leader can be taught, but it also stems from having specific traits that are embedded subconsciously. A leader exhibits a strong sense of qualities and can also be labeled as authentic. An authentic leader is seen as someone who is real or genuine. Developing traits or habits as an authentic leader is beneficial in the health care field.
Health care leadership involves an array of qualities needed to perform job duties and functions. Since leaders make decisions that shape the way we see healthcare, it’s important to understand their role. As someone who has spent the majority of their career in healthcare, I’ve experienced many instances in which my perspective changed based on leadership. At one point in time, I was placed in a lead role in which I had to make decisions that not only affected me, but others around me. This experience made me look at how my prime actions in healthcare can really impact someone’s life. My leadership could enable or disable the future of someone else.
As a leader, it’s more than just guidance, its authenticity. Authentic leadership is being yourself at all times and over the last decade has become the gold standard in healthcare. To become an authentic leader, flexibility and honesty should be at the forefront. This caters to the capabilities of their teammates. An authentic leader can be anyone from a mentor to a manager. As long as leading is imperative. Qualities of an authentic leader include:
§ Sense of purpose
§ Distinct Values
§ Relationship Building
§ Genuine Heart
§ Goals and Self-Discipline
These traits can be keys to success if you use them correctly and distribute these values to your team. A sense of purpose allows others to see you as approachable and caring, while distinct values mean you won’t compromise for just anything if it isn’t done with integrity. Other traits like relationship building and self-discipline focus on real connections with people around them but relies heavily on goals and points. Lastly, having a genuine heart. Being an authentic leader involves showing compassion to others and caring for their general needs.
