Great article on the future of AstraZeneca (you be the judge!)

No new products since the company was merged up. Plenty of self-aggrandizing and no production from senior management, plenty of blame placed on other people.

Lots and lots of money wasted because the leadership team couldn't see that the ship was headed for Niagara Falls, else they didn't care so long as the had their golden parachutes ready for when the ship runs out of river.

No matter how you look at it, it is senior leadership's fault. One of the biggest examples of management failure in the history of business, IMO. A decade of enormous revenues and nothing to show for it except expired patents and lawsuit liabilities.

They stayed drunk for years on Prilosec and Nexium money. They continue to waste money like there is no tomorrow (i.e. the upcoming MCR meetings as well as the other scheduled meetings in July, of all months!!) So Crestor is going to Cornerstone next year huh? Well, all of you poor bastards in MCR better polish up your resumes. Your clock is ticking. Actually, that's good advice for all of us. It won't be long now.

So true, so true. The layoffs will actually take place in 2012. When Brilinta gets it's restricted approval, and Seroquel goes generic, and Crestor/Vimovo takes a dive, AZ will have no choice because of their incredibly poor decisions to lay us off. We will pay a high price for their mistakes. A very high price.

Why would they lay us off? We are so vital! Who will deliver the pizzas and fake the calls?

You, sadly, are right. Over the next few months rumors will fly left and right. By early next Spring, many lives will be turned upside down because of the horrible mistakes that were/are being made by senior leadership. They have hired many extra layers of sales people from the CSA's, to the PharmD. reps from CVS Clinical Consultants. All done with the end point of replacing as many of us as they can. It's amazing that they have been allowed to run this company into the ground. Tony Zook and higher, should be held accountable. The sheer waste at those company is beyond amazing. It will soon be over for many of us in the coming months. If you haven't already started to do the things necessary to leave, you have made a huge mistake.

Brillinta + low dose aspirin > Plavix + low dose aspirin
Plavix + high dose aspirin > Brillinta + high dose aspirin

does not equal aspirin is just as effective as Brillinta.

Those taking more than 300 mg of aspirin and Brilinta fared worse than those taking Plavix. When taking lower doses of aspirin, Brilinta beat Plavix in preventing heart attack, strokes, and early death according to research presented by the AMA Emerging Science Series seminar. The analysis found no systematic errors in the analyzed Plato trial. Many North American patients also received high dose aspirin. High dose aspirin >300 mg/day was used far more often in the US than in the rest of the world (53.6% vs 1.7%). The FDA asked for additional analysis of Plato.

It may be that high dose aspirin has a correlation with the effectiveness of Brilinta, not that aspirin was better.

The question is, what will this mean to a U.S. label if approved, and depending on the label, how transparent regarding aspirin > 300 mg will AZ be in promotions, keeping in mind that >50 of patients may be on a dose over 300 mg.

All patients that take this class of medicine...... are prescribed Aspirin (unless allergic). Asprin is the standard of care.

So true. It sells for .5 cents each, too, and that's the rub. If a major pharma co. held a patent on aspirin, it would cost AT LEAST $200.00 for 30 pills, instead of 15 cents, and there would be trials galore PROVING its safety and efficacy. If a competitor came along with a brillanta or plavix, there would be a fight and lawsuits. Every rep on each side of the fight would be trained to believe that he's right, and that the doctors are taking huge risks and endangering lives by giving people a Plavix or anything instead of aspirin.

There would also be a plethora of law firms advertising on TV hawking the dangers of aspirin for stomach ulcers, Reyes syndrome, etc. in class action law suits in an effort to rid pharma of some of its profits. That being said, you gotta admit that aspirin is a heckuva drug and if developed today it wouldn\'t go cheap - if it could get to market with any useful indications!

Regarding Brilinta, even if it doesnt look so great, the outcome will likely be - put a smile on that pig and sell it.
