Walk before layoffs begin? Insults, "dumb rep" comments (to people who are obviously not), toxic job remarks, reps too old to rep, managers who can't be pleased....Yea...we'll have a jump on what's out there, be one less for them to break the news to and ahhhh one less package needs to be offered! All these reps who have moved on.......where are they???? Spouses saying "take a vacation for awhile, I'll pick up the mortgage and expenses?" Get a better job offer? Winning the sweepstakes, good at picking numbers? Might be a good idea for everyone to look, but skip the insults....most reps here are high performing professionals not the idiots that a percentage of posters would like them to be....

Just got an hourly contract job for 40 hours/wk at $40/hour with time and a half for any overtime hours worked as a starting windows based systems tech in medical records imaging for a large Catholic Hospital System. Thank you thank you thank you 2 year tech program. Best investment I made in myself while doing this rep thing. Yes, there can be life after Merck people. Get the message??

Sounds pretty good. Do you get paid for the time it takes to do all the administrative stuff, the paperwork, reports, trackers, expense reports, test taking, studying, email/voicemail digesting/responding, teleconferences, and otherwise work planning/prepping to work with your manager when off the clock? Obviously you don't have lunches or programs to worry about, do you? If you get paid for all that I'd consider looking into it, too. If not, I'll keep my pharma job, thanks.

Congrats. Just like gambling, we hear more about people winning than losing. I know there are quite a few ex-Merck reps struggling to land a decent job a few years after they were eased out.

Getting any health benefits and 401K with them? Hope you know that if you work as a consultant you need to pay double SS to Uncle Sam and the employment deducations yourself, so your paycheck is much smaller than you might expect. What was the cost of the tech program.

Yeah, I know and as you sound like you know, I do have to pay for my own health benefits. Unfortunately that's the price I'm willing to pay to enhance my chances of getting hired by them after 12-18 months according to a friend who did the same thing as I'm trying to do. It's not uncommon for employers of tech people to hire this way. You get your foot in the door, do a good job and make a name for yourself, and then get moved to the head of the line when internal company positions become available. I'm 28 and figured it wasn't worth it to stay at Merck if I really didn't see any future or opportunities that interested me. The tech program took me a little over 2 years to complete and I paid a little over $4800. Its nice to be excited again about my work and I'm having fun doing it. The work atmosphere itself made the move totally worth it.

Not bad. My grad degree cost about 90K. Bummer paying this sucker off and no jobs. Good luck/

Big downside to working on your own. It's expensive, you pay for everything, much higher tax related obligations, get no perks or benefits and it can be very hard to save a dime. Stick with a coporate job unless you're an MD.....but even they now need to join a coporation in the form of a "group."
