Yesterday, I was honored to speak on a Fierce Pharma panel about our steps we can take to achieve greater diversity in clinical trials. We agreed that while we’re making progress, there is more we can do to achieve greater equity and rebuild trust between the biopharmaceutical industry and communities of color including:
1. Breaking down the systemic barriers that prevent underserved communities from participating in clinical trials in order to create an environment in which all patients interested in participating in studies feel empowered to do so
2. Developing a diverse pool of clinical investigators and staff that reflect the populations that our medicines are intended to serve
3. Building lasting and meaningful relationships and investments in underrepresented communities
4. Engaging communities in conversations about how clinical trials are designed
5. Creating a network of clinical trial sites in underserved communities to meet potential participants where they already receive care
Thank you to @Fierce Pharma for organizing a platform to continue this important conversation. I’m optimistic and energized by the opportunity our industry has to create a more equitable, humane and sustainable future for healthcare in America.
Seriously? Is there some grand conspiracy in our industry designed to keep certain groups out of clinical trials? Are we to believe that the healthcare system conspires to harm people based on the color of their skin?
How about this. We get good products to market, deliver them with managed care access so our patients can benefit and we get back into the field full time to share information with our providers so they can help their patients. Takeda exists to make profit. Stop the virtual signaling and social justice programming. Get down to business and move the stock price.
