Getting out of Device

Currently in device but doubting whether I can make good money in the long run. Currently making around 100k, but have zero benefits and no expenses reimbursed. No year end bonus and low commission rate on top of the prices of implants going down makes the future look bleak to me. Interested in exploring other opportunities. Have received some inquires about biomedical with a nice compensation, plus benefits, car etc along with no on call. Basically I'm not sure this industry is worth it anymore. Blowing up my territory will only provide incremental money increase and the expenses and benefits on my own dime is getting very expensive.

Where should I start to look? Which biotech companies are the best. Any other suggestions for companies that provide an opportunity to make good money while having the benefits and expenses paid?

There are lots of medical companies that offer base, benefits, and cover expenses. I don't know much about selling implants (orthopedic I'm assuming) so I can't give you much guidance on companies to consider, but within the surgical arena there are tons of companies that will give you a base and benefits. Biotech is probably a good thing to consider, regardless of what some meatballs on here will say. They'll make fun of you for going from medical to biotech, but you have to do what's best for you (note, I am not in Biotech either). The fact is biotech has always been relatively stable, has small territories, and tends to pay high base and great benefits. I'm more optimistic about the future path of biotech than certain areas of medical device in the coming years.
Here's something to consider- if you build your territory to where you can make $150k (50% growth- no easy task in short timeframe), here is how the math actually works:
- You will be taxed about 30% - so now your net annual income is $105k.
- Subtract your expenses out of your net annual income. If they are $2k/month, now your annual income is really $81k.
- That is essentially the same as finding a job making $115k gross (at 30% tax rate you would net $80k) at a company that covers your expenses and benefits.

Assuming you're a good rep, you shouldn't have a problem finding a job with $115k gross opportunity with all expenses and benefits covered.

Good luck.

Clearly you work for a distributor selling worst in class ortho/spine products. There are literally 50 companies that pay better than that with benefits, car allowance etc... Selling OR products or other disposables to hospitals or doctors in offices. You can't think in terms of just OR sales or implants. You have a limited view of what's out there bc all you know is one segment of this business. I see this all the time from ortho reps who think they have this great job. Frankly I don't care if you make 250k. With no benefits or expenses and on call that job is a step above cleaning a gay porn set in my opinion. You can be an associate at ethicon and do better than this.

Before you bail explore positions outside ortho, you can leverage those contacts in hospital to do much better. Trust me.

Thanks for the feedback. Any suggestions to which companies to start looking at? I'm open to anything.

What are the best companies/ specialty outside of Ortho to start looking?

You clearly have never gone the independent route, therefore, you are uninformed. Maybe you should get a good accountant and throw away that 1040-EZ?
