From Science to Sleaze: Merck's descent into darkness

I would imagine that one day, years from now, MBA students will be studying Merck's downfall as a case study in greed, incompetence and hubris...How one of America's premiere "high science" companies went from the covers of Fortune magazine, to the scrap heap of Big Pharma companies, is legend...When they decided to sell sex instead of science, it was basically over...Game, set, match...

Then the corruption set in, and middle management needed a major scapegoat...That of course, became the sales force and the managers became nasty supercops to try and demonstrate some semblance of value justifying their bloated compensation.

Merck hands the company over to a slick-willie lawyer as a reward for his "brilliant" money saving strategy during the VIOXX debaucle...that pretty much says it all huh? Great move Merck!!

and Peter Kim...Ahhh...yes.....Peter Kim...That guy has been more unproductive than a
Louisiana street-trollop on a 72-hour meth bender...To be fair though, I don't see the "scientific" heads of the other big pharma companies exactly cranking out annual blockbusters either...let's face it people, the low-hanging fruit got picked years ago...

In any case, it is not a pretty picture...I am glad I finally got out...Yeah, the lifestyle was nice, but at such a cost...

Merck is just not worth losing sleep over...What a friggin' mess of a company.

Merck incompetence is obvious to most from the outside, especially those holding a financial interest in the company. But is it really that bad as you described it? You sound like a convict escaping a cruelly managed prison.

It's worse. You should see the so-called labs. I've seen college labs and facilities in better and more modernized shape. Too bad penicillin has already been discovered because there's plenty of mold growing there that some scientist could have stumbled upon.

What happened to Merck, some may ask. For one thing, somewhere along the line they figured they could be a pharma company by focusing more on selling and less on R&D. I get it, selling is a quick fix. But you end up with what we have now. Dried up pipeline, void of people that have actually discovered drugs, bad reputation in scientific community and lack of any creativity or innovation because all of the Steve Jobs of the science world would rather work for a science company that focuses on science.

Good luck to all of the lab rats in Merck. Maybe u guys'll get lucky and find the next penicillin.

Just checking in..not the OP....If you lab guys get lucky and find the next blockbuster drug, take it and run with it, so what if you have to play at mercks lowest level of ethics....give it to another company that is worthy of respect by how they treat their employees...the ULTIMATE PAYBACK! This company destroys lives at so many levels from families, friends, not to mention the back stabbing of coworkers who are being pitted against each other by their scrupulous managers...don't fall prey to mother's venomous snare... she is the black WIDOW! The ones that fall into her deceit deserve to be eaten and spit out! Selling your soul is a dangerous game not to be played with the black widow, mother merck re: Jerck & Co! Get even...i did and have succeeded quite well may I add and I still have a little more work to do OWOHAHAA

Pfizer is always a marketing company. We used to be a R&D company that did not know how to market products like them. Then we decided we want to be just like Pfizer. People always tumble on ideas. 3M with the Post-It notepads. Merck with Timoptic which was an eye drop formulation of Blocadren (a non-selective poor beta blocker).
