FDA: Novartis Recall May Also Affect Painkillers

WASHINGTON January 9, 2012 (AP)

The Food and Drug Administration is warning patients about a potential mix-up between powerful prescription pain drugs and common over-the-counter medications made at a Novartis manufacturing plant.

The issue stems from manufacturing problems at a Lincoln, Neb., facility which triggered a recall Sunday of 1,645 lots of Novartis' over-the-counter drugs, including Excedrin, Bufferin, NoDoz and Gas-X. The company has received hundreds of complaints of broken and chipped pills and inconsistent bottle packaging that could cause pills to be mixed up. Consumers are advised to stop using the products and contact the company for a refund.

FDA officials warned Monday that some of Novartis' over-the-counter pills may have accidentally been packaged with powerful prescription painkillers made at the same facility. The opioid drugs are sold by Endo Pharmaceuticals as Percocet, Endocet, Opana and Zydone.

Are you kidding me? This is a horrible mistake. I hope someone doesn't die! Oh honey, let me go take some gas-x before I go to bed....wow, how come I'm wired....or, call 911 because I'm having a heart attack! Way to go Novartis!

Didn't that plant recently have a layoff?

Yes,

The Nebraska Plant which laid off 600. Hummm, makes you wonder what really goes on because this is just the icing on the cake for Novartis. With everything going down hill this just makes things really bad.

rather amusing no matter the length width & breadth of management royal fuck ups that include endangering peoples lives , deaths , horrific illness or cause hundreds of millions in fines, they survive unscathed
Novartis is the only company in any industry that makes the US GOVT look efficient , frugal & smart by comparison

You guys are idiots. Before you start talking trash, you should do some research. Novartis doesn't run this facility. They package medication for them and many other drug companies.

Are you aware of the obligations of a licence holder? You are ultimately responsible for the quality of the drugs you put on the market, no matter who's actually doing the manufacturing steps for you. Ever heard of auditing of third party service providers?

If the facility was not run by NVS (which it is, sorry, read the inspection report in the public domain), it must have been audited, therefore no excuses! FDA finally woke up, more to come.
