Ethicon Culture

I NEVER post. I guess I've gotten to the point that I feel I have to. There's a lot going on in the world but I am going to be myopic for a few minutes. Forgive me.

I have been at JNJ for 20 years. Did my boss even recognize it? No. Aside from that I've had a very successful career, moving from start-ups, to R & D to Supply Chain across the broad in several functions and increasingly responsible positions. I decided to make a big jump and move to a new sector. I expected they wanted a new perceptive, change or something different....or they had no talent pipeline. Foreshadowing...they don't but don't see it!!

So I moved. What I found was a totally dysfunctional organization. So Top Down that it is sickening. No trust, everyone is expected to knows every detail that there is no reason for mid management. Plain and simple, there is no empowerment of people leaders. New perspectives are not welcome. They are squashed. The culture is stagnant and those who challenges are labeled and pushed out. I can point to 4 very successful women leaders that Ethicon pushed aside because they stood up to the "status quo" or weren't total suck ups. Power hungry people who horde information as power are respected here. People who don't partner or align teams are respected here. There is no agenda for change. The only driver of change are the numbers....only the long time kiss butts will survive in this backwards focused place.

Nicely summarized. The more you kiss up, the more successful you will be. Keep kissing up if you want to survive, plain and simple. That is across the board, especially marketing and sales.

It's not just Ethicon, but any organization will be the same way. I've been with JNJ for 21 years and am out my 4th operating company. Any new boss wants you to prove yourself in your new job function BEFORE they want to hear from you about how they/the company can improve anything.

As far as just maintaining the status quo and kissing butt, any large organization is like that, despite what all the business books say just fall into line if you want to have opportunities to work on good projects and opportunities for advancement or you will be labeled as a trouble maker. Any large organization wants yes men.

Terrible culture! But now is the time to be vocal, leaders are listening. They know they f’d up and our results show. Even pre-covid YOY Business revenue sucks, credo/our voice results are pathetic, attrition is terrible, rate of advancement of good talent is non existent..
they just want people to conform. Anyone who seems even slightly different is scared for life with terrible feedback that follows them everywhere they go. No chance of thriving after that.
Now when our black brothers and sisters are speaking up boldly and honestly, leaders are listening. hope they take bold actions too.
Peace out!

Is there anything good about Ethicon's culture?

As leadership of the company we all tried to set good examples to the team. During this unprecedented tine we all will be relying on each and everyone of you to make sure that you continue to work.

Bernie Sanders and socialized selling?
It’s where you go if you aren’t really very good at anything

The culture thrives on discrimination, driving people that push back or don’t get in line, and below average products. If it wasn’t for suture, they would already be gone

Yes... pre-COVID I worked 20 hours a week and was paid handsomely while having the respect of my boss and peers. Post-COVID I work 10 hours a week and everyone in my region thinks I’m kicking ass. Gotta love the teet know as J&J!

BB.....no one thinks you’re kicking ass. Go back to your basement now.

I have been at JNJ for a long time as well
Be clear on the JNJ process:
1. Make your boss look good
2. Stay out at the bars with your boss so that they can expense all of their liquor
3. Undercut everyone around you so that you look better because the year end means someone isn’t going to meet expectation and you don’t want it to be you
