End of the Road?? Arthrex axes commission

Has anyone heard of true commissions going away at Arthrex? Is it an Arthrex corporate decision or is it a distributorship decision?? The new comp plans they rolled out at my distributorship pay on growth and if I sell a specified amount of a new product I get a defined bonus. But getting a percentage off the top for all product sold aka “dollar one” is gone. Please folks let me know what your hearing east coast/west coast/south/mid west. I really don’t know how they expect us to sell now more than ever and pay us less?!? Even territory leads have been taken off commissions. I think it’s times for us reps to unionize. If we unionize we can then take back the power and make demands as to what is fair or unfair compensation. Nothing here is clear. Everything is different for every rep, NDA’s now are being asked of us to sign for comp plans. I mean what is going on? Did the regional managers/VP’s and owners take their cuts? I’m just tired man , tired of being asked to do more and paid less. Input on this post is greatly appreciated.

I work out on the west coast and at the last compensation conversation I had, which by the way I had to ask for my own year end review and had it rescheduled 4 times. Once I got a chance to meet with my regional it was pretty much open and shut. They told me this is what we can give you take it or leave it. I received a modest increase in base and some incentives but no direct commissions from any products I sold or plan to sell. Not really told the “why” behind anything or what the clear direction of what Arthrex is planning or doing. I hope this helps. I can understand your frustrations not being told what going on nor give information is unsettling to say the least . We are a performance based business and regardless of how long you been with a distributorship it comes down to how much you sell vs your goals. If you meet and exceed your quota you should be compensated accordingly nor should you have to state a case or claw and fight for why you should be paid. Every time I got into these meetings i feel I have to state my case and fight for what I earned. It should be pretty straight forward. If I crushed my quota pay me.

I worked for Arthrex , won’t name the distributorship but let’s just say the on the east Coast and in NY. Worse company I have ever worked for, clearly mismanaged from top to bottom. Senior leadership if you even want to refer to them as leaders were never available to speak to me one on one, messaging and or expectations were NOT clear and discernible. The VP of sales was either on his boat or in the gym or eating sushi with his chosen few that he felt were worth of his company. In the same breathe he was the one to give his 2 meetings a year where he would preach family and unity and how we all are one big team. Well he got the family part right; specifically nepotism. This guy had not one but two of his family members working for the organization. I bet they were taken care of. I never felt like I was part of a team, my manager was never around and I was consistently given mixed messages around performance and pay. I was a consistent performer and never felt like I was paid fairly. Each year I was asked to do more with less. I finally had enough and went to go work in bio-tech. Much happier and much better off. Working for Arthrex is not what I thought it would be. I heard this company was great to work for in its infancy however that’s not the case today. Arthrex has full control over the orthopedic industry from top to bottom. They don’t us really anymore. We are there to open boxes and make sure our equipment is readily available. Why would they pay me? I just wish I wasn’t led to believe I can make all this money like the VP of sales promised. That guy really took advantage of a young eager man who was really looking to be part of an organization that one can he proud of. Instead what I got was the exact opposite. Sad part is I bet he doesn’t even remember my name or know who i am if bumped into in the street. I felt used to be quiet honestly. I’m just glad I was young enough to pivot in my career. What I didn’t want was to be that 35 year old guy who has been doing this job for a decade plus chasing some surgeon down by the scrub sink begging him to look at my new overpriced anchor. At least what I’m doing now I am getting fairly compensated and I’m working on some pretty cool innovations that I hope will in turn make peoples lives better and not put money in someone’s pocket so he can refill his boat on my hard earned sweet and tears.

I am sorry to hear that. Arthrex is simply an evil company run by evil people. It’s really that simple.

Good luck in the future. Any employer must have more integrity than Arthrex or any of its agencies. What a sham company!

sounds like Gotham to me

I have been working for Arthrex via the distributorship not corporate and I can vouch for most of what has been discussed on this thread. The model has changed and the agencies are simply not paying the same commission structure a competitor would. They quite frankly don’t need to . They have reached a saturation point in the industry where it is no longer needed to pay top dollar to get their name and product out. It definitely is disheartening to say the least but this day was bound to come. If you have strong relationships with your Ortho’s and accounts jump to a competitor who will pay you to grow their market share. Those companies are out there but Arhtrex is simply not in a position where they need to do that. However they still pay their agencies 29% gross commissions on overall sales for the year so the money is still getting paid out so whose pockets are those dollars going into? That’s why your going to see more and more people wake up and jump ship but Arthrex won’t care much cause they have their market share so this should be interesting over next few years. Arthrex will go direct and that’s when officially the party is over.

So let me get this straight. They want you to push trauma and cover existing business and not pay commissions from dollar 1. .

If you stay and take that deal you must not have another opportunity elsewhere.

I would start a handyman business before I take that deal.

All the agencies of Arthrex are no longer paying direct commissions ($1) instead they pay of growth which as you know is not a guarantee and or incentives for hitting certain percentages over growth for ex: 105% 2k, 110% 4K . They also throw some incentives if you sell (X) amount of a certain focus product that particular year. It’s not straight forward and your not getting a percentage on all products you sell. Other organizations like Stryker, OsteoMed, Wright, In2Bones, Biomet, Zimmer. Their comp plan are straight forward most are 100% commissions based guys are 1099. You essentially eat what you kill. Arthrex is just setting up their reps for the long game, they eventually will go direct. Agency and those in upper management will be bought out and the rest let go and absorbed into direct model. This is what we pay now take or leave.

RH- Reinhold , founder and owner of Arthrex. He is a narcissistic blood thirsty gutless vile human being. Not only is he looking for world domination when it comes to the sports medicine business he also Indoctrinates his corporate suits to them go out and prey on the feeble minded agencies and those who work for them. He represents everything that is wrong with this business. Needs to be stopped.

Was with a company who did this went from paying $1 to a growth model. If you have a high volume territory start looking . The best territories are the low volume ones makes growing them easier . Corp will say you have the opportunity to make more but for most it will be a haircut .

His merry band of kaleidoscope eyed, incompetent jackass suits can’t stop tripping over themselves with their awe for this man. They screwed up the valuation of AOS, massively overpaid, lied to RS about his ROI, and now have to recover the loss from their error on sales rep commissions. That’s how it works. Of course RS will never get the truth, but there it is.

They have made some questionable acquisitions. The I-balance HTO was a head scratcher. Never understood spend a decent chunk of change on a technology that isn’t used very often. Just not a lot of HTOs performed.

RH tipped his hand years ago when he stated that his #1 competitor was his sales force. You are crazy to work for someone that says that.

Your post is misleading and inaccurate. RS use to say, “Our number one customer is our distributor agencies”.

This was routinely stated in the owners meetings in context of supporting agencies.

With that being said, my personal opinion is that Arthrex forgot about the “little guy” or those who actually standing in front of the customer a long time ago.

Experienced sales folks know this is just a stepping stone to get into medical device sales. There is little opportunity for advancement. Which is the reason Arthrex has such high turnover. Locally we’ve seen reps fleeing Arthrex for other opportunities.

As a manager of a competitive company, I consistently have local Arthrex sales representatives as candidates for open positions. While there are a mixture of reasons as to why reps are seeking other employment, a lack of financial transparency and upward professional trajectory seem to be the norm.

The meeting I was in RS said the salesforce was the number 1 competitor because they couldn’t keep up with the volume of new technologies the company was producing. An arrogant take IMO. He decided to solve this problem with flooding the market with anyone that had a pulse and could slap on a badge. Very few make money in the Arthrex pyramid scheme.

Oh they still paying dollar one. It’s just going into RS Coffers to pay for his legal fee’s every time he keeps caught by DOJ for paying his surgeons under the table the hock is shit products
