EES becomes a REPROCESSOR !?

I thought I was going to faint when I saw it in the headlines today. I'm still sick to my stomach. I no longer work for EES; however I proudly carried the banner and esposed the superior ethicss of EES and J&J. I ignored job offers from the reporcessing venture groups who offered big money for me to leave. I said no fearing I would be crossing over to the dark side and that my peers at J&J would treat me as though I had a scarlet letter appended to my shirt, not an A, but an R.

I'm depressed. Not that EES is changing, but that they have embraced a practice they abhorred - science proven that it is not in the best interest of the patient. I still beleive that. EES business is screwed - watch the disposable volumes tumble now, watch all those reposables hidden in R&D vaults make their way out to the market now. This redfines the era of disposable medical device. The trickle down will be huge. Sad, Very Sad.

Really? I appreciate your ethics but you are a serious numbnuts if you turned down job offers because you had worked for jnj and wanted to continue on with the ethics and credo they say they have.

You should have never left JNJ as you are the perfect robot they like to have.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! All this time we are told reprocessing is soooo bad! Well I said it on here a long time ago and stated that the time was coming because it was taking such a big bite out of us. Welllllll, I am going independent, don't want to look like such a big friggin liar to customers after telling them all this crap about reprocessing. If anybody wants some lines let me know what state you are in and I will see if I can get you some.

So we purchased a second class reprocessor? Sterilmed only owns about 15% of the reprocessing market. Stryker/Ascent has that market locked up. If J&J was smart, they would have moved on Ascent long ago. Now we are stuck with a trash company that can't compete in the reprocessing world. This is so typical. Check please...

Are you referring to the da Vinci?

Here is Chuck Austins' due diligence summary on Sterilmed back in May:

"Ethicon Endo-Surgery Response to Allegations About Attempts to Thwart Third Party Reprocessing
Cincinnati - May 16, 2011
Over the past few months Ascent Healthcare Solutions, Inc. and Sterilmed, Inc. have been distributing false information about Ethicon Endo-Surgery (EES) efforts related to third party reprocessing and we feel it's time to set the record straight.

EES does not intentionally design our single-use devices (SUDs) to thwart reprocessing efforts. EES labels our SUDs as single-use because these devices have intricate parts that are difficult to clean thoroughly for use on multiple patients. Our commitment to quality is part of the value EES brings to our customers and their patients and we believe third party reprocessing may compromise the quality of our original single-use devices.

Moving forward, we will continue to be passionate about developing innovative, high-quality technology-based solutions that deliver superior patient outcomes. It will remain the responsibility of Third Party Reprocessors (TPRs) to determine if a device can effectively be reprocessed. EES cannot speak on behalf of their capabilities so we are unable to speculate on whether future devices can or cannot be reprocessed or how long it will take them to receive FDA clearance. For example, in the case of the EES HARMONIC® FOCUS Curved Shears, it took more than two years after the EES launch for a TPR to gain 510(k) clearance of their reprocessed version.

EES is committed to working with you to find economic solutions without compromising the quality you've come to expect from our portfolio of solutions. Thank you for your continued support and partnership toward our common goal of driving superior outcomes for patients.

Sincerely,

Chuck Austin
Worldwide President, Ethicon Endo-Surgery"

So, Sterilimed spreads false information about EES and EES responds by rewarding Sterilimed with an acquisition and huge premium payout and oh yeah -keep management there and continue to do your jobs. What the _______?

Haha, I had a good laugh when I read that Ethicon purchased SterilMed. Whoever posted about Ethicon needing to buy Ascent when they had the chance, I agree! I led my hospital reprocessing program and managed our Ethicon endo-mechanical contract, so I had a very unique perspective having to manage competing efforts. I kept close contact with my Ethicon account manager who has since moved on. I shared this with him and we both had a good laugh.

I'm glad they are finally giving up their stance on reprocessing!

i sell capital equipment, so not too familiar with this... but do hospitals use a reimbursement code specific for reprocessed devices (which should get reimbursed at a lower amount)? or do they use the same code as if the device is new and make even more money per procedure..?? also are patients given the right to choose a new device instead of a reprocessed one on any of the consent forms they sign?

Simply, CMS reimburses hospitals based on the procedural code; not by individual devices - but rather for the entire procedure regardless of which device(s) or how many devices are used during a procedure. Reprocessed, new, 2, 3, 4, doesn't matter. There is no informed consent because the the FDA indicates the reprocessed device is no different from a new one. You wouldn't have a patient consent the use of a Stryker hip vs a S&N hip.
