Dental Territory Manager with Zimmers Canada in Western Canada

Hi everyone,

I am at the initial stage of a sales opportunity with Zimmer Canada's Dental division. I understand through research that dental is a very small division within Zimmer Canada and they are more known for orthopedics. I don't know if this is a right opportunity suitable for me with no medical or dental equipment sales experience...

I am a young sales professional with an undergraduate degree in business along with 3 years of sales experience in copier sales and industrial manufacturing (account management). Health care is an industry I want to get into and am looking at different opportunities

Looking for any comments on the company itself and how their dental division is doing from a sales perspective in the industry.

Any guidance or comments from professionals in the industry or from Zimmer Canada would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much :)

From what I know of recent Zimmer Dental in Canada, they've lost a lot of reps in the past year, not sure why, and they've been selling on price to maintain business. They've been losing share in Canada.

If you want to break into medical device sales, I'd say it could be a good opportunity. Dental is quite a bit different than knees or hips however. Depends on how desperate you are and how willing you are to put in some time, with the potential of leaving the company in 2 years.

Yes I want to work for a recognized company in the industry. I understand their dental division is not ranked as high as hips or needs, however, there is definitely potential for field coverage in Western Canada. Leveraging the Zimmer brand recognition and #1 spot in othorpeadics.

What is so different about Dental ? I heard it has now become a very competitive market and some offices will even buy from companies overseas with limited credibility in north america.

I was also told Dental is considered the higher rannk with respect to medical device sales positions. In terms of monetary and recognition in the industry.

Any thoughts or comments?

Wrong on virtually every level. Sorry. First, dental is the forgotten division at Zimmer, no one really cares about it aside from the fact that it generates decent profit. Second, there is zero leverage between dental and orthopedics, nothing to be gained. Third, most dentists want to buy implants from reputable players not from unknown overseas companies. Finally, dental implants are barely considered medical devices so your idea of a ranking is wrong.

Sounds like you are getting bad advice from a recruiter that is pushing you into dental?

Dental sales are done over the phone a lot now. Hard to call on so many offices, very price driven. Ortho sales are more relationship and you're in every case. Often in sales you're hired if you can bring the surgeon with you. Coming from dental to ortho will be hard.
