Culture Change

Andy Weiss, Brian Goff, and each of our new GM's got up on stage and talked a big game about our cultural changes-
1) Jeans at the meeting
2) Being business owners
3) Results driven, not KPI driven
4) Recognition of our military (which i thought was pretty cool)
5) Giving back- Volunteering

I am seeing my manager talk the same language- We can't let these guys go back to the "same old" ways. KPI's, Programs.... busy work....

Is anybody noticing a difference?

First time you heard this? Not me. Every reorg/regime change has said the same thing for years. I've hung on for years waiting for a real leader and things get worse no better. My RD actually contradicted the VP's at our breakouts and told us KPI's were still business drivers and our success depended on them, "so don't think they don't matter". These Moe's have been raised on the SOV teet and ain't letting go anytime soon.

BTW, I've finally given up hope and have signed a letter with another org. Lining up the ducks and I'll be gone without any regrets.

My manager is on board with the new changes and is encouraging a more "business ownership" mindset, and less on kpi metrics.

And you know this how? Because they told you. KPI's are the only hammer they have since they can;t actually coach you. First bad QTR and you'll see. Like I said, been there, done that.

Ha Ha Ha Ha....Seems they forgot to mention managers will still be forced to give a quota of "1s" no matter whether anyone on their team deserves such a rating. Why do you think evaluation process is continuing to move away from sales numbers to values and behaviors? Easier to give a 1. Culture is toxic and will continue to be that way. Andy Weiss will go back to Europe in a couple years and some other joker will come in with his b.s. about a new "culture".

I agree that every regime change parrots that things will be different. This has occured the 15 years I have been with Novartis. When it all shakes out, absolutely nothing changes. Management is too busy covering their own asses and kissing those above them to show any real leadership Anyone I have ever met with integrity in management has either resigned or been forced out. I have just taken a position with another company (not pharma) and, although I a not naive to think everything is rosy, I know this is an industry that will be around after the next few years. In addition, I will be able to control my own business.

When will you people learn that companies are always looking to trim fat to make the bottom line look profitable.

Companies do not owe their employees anything. The faster you understand this, the faster you can move on. When one door closes, open a new door.

There is no such thing as loyalty to employees. This notion died in the 60's. We are all replaceable little cogs in a wheel.

If you think any corporate culture changes, you are mad. Bottom line people - that's it. Get over it.

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this.....btw, nothing ever changes. Lets see, you want to change the culture, so you allow jeans at mtgs? Really? Its that easy? How stupid is that anyways...jeans! Lets all party! Peace on earth! The company has changed! Watch and see how they really treat people, not this list of drab. Oh, anyone around about 5 yrs ago for the Phoenix mtg in Onc when we all made little red bikes for poor kids? That was supposed to be soulfull and reign in a new era of volunteerism and making a difference.......nothing changed.....nobody ever saw those kids again or probably cared in mgt, and we sent them out on bikes without helmets......its Novartis...it wont change until you make it change by leaving.

There is still integrity in the industry. Just have to find the right company. Mostly the small companies that worry about employee morale. They, unlike these mega companies, realize that a happy, well treated employee is a productive one most of the time. Your kind of attitude toward this subject is straight off the Novartis training page. Be a good little soldier and walk in lock step and do whatever your commander tells you even if you know it's counter-productive. Feed the egos of these so-called leaders and they will keep making these promises as they do their dog and pony show at every meeting. Like your heros in upper management, keep that ego first in your thoughts. It's no wonder how you've stayed with this company it would be hard for you to function in a real pharma company. Keep charging down the guns but remember they'll tire of your little kiss-ass show soon and you'll get the same severance package the newhire that took your position will get. If all else use the chapstik!

Evenually there will not be any mangers. Mark my words! I only have 3 offices that will let him come back and as long as he is with me, I can't talk about product. It's coming- FLM are not needed!

Let me give you something to think about. What if your manager actually eventually gets your job? The idea never occurred to me until one day when mine made the statement that managers are now the only "true portfolio reps." I'm sure she meant that currently, managers are the only ones trained on all products. But the more I think about it, the more I feel like I'm training my own replacement. She works with us on such a regular basis (two day ride alongs for each rep once a month) that she knows my geography, customers (for the offices who allow her access) and business almost as well as I do. In this time of industry downsizing and seeing the rep as a liability, I can see NVS cutting the current field force reps and having one rep (current manager) per large geography. Wild speculation? Maybe. But with much of our portfolio going generic, it could happen sooner than you think. Bottom line--start working on Plan B now if you haven't already.
