I really like Kellen Moore. He's not pompous, arrogant nor does he outwardly exude what we generally consider to be leadership skills in a star quarterback. And he doesn't look like an athlete when the pads come off. Kellen is not a standout physical specimen. The announcer even compared him with "The Beav" from the old show 'Leave it to Beaver'. But that's why I like him so much. Despite lacking the natural attributes of, let's say, a Cam Newton - the man has been a tremendous college football success story and is a leading Heisman candidate. I always have much more respect for a guy who had to compensate for his shortcomings with hard work to achieve greatness than the next guy who was simply born with the gifts to be great.
With that said, I asked myself whether Kellen Moore would make it at the next level? Let's face it - those 240 pound LB's who run a 4.4 sec. forty sting when they blindside. How many of those hits could Kellen take? He has proven to be tough, both mentally and physically at the college level. I have seen him get hammered and get right back up again. And to my recollection, he has never missed a game due to injuries. He's a tough hombre.
Another fact is that Kellen is just not a running QB. That's not his forte. But do you have to be in order to be a great QB in the pros? Well, the running threat certainly helps. But there have been many pro QB's who couldn't run worth a damn. Sonny Jurgenson, Johnny Unitas, Rex Grossman, Joe Namath, Joe Montana - none of them were great runners. So I don't think that would be a huge obstacle for Kellen.
Kellen's strong point is that he can thread a needle with a football. You saw him in the Georgia game. He can throw off balance inbetween 3 defenders and still hit his target. His interception ratio has been extremely low throughout his college career. The man has a golden arm.
Did you see his new wife in the stands? I think her name was Julie? They look like they were made for one another. Childhood sweethearts. The American love story. Mom, apple pie and the girl next door.
Do I think Kellen can go to the next level? No doubt about it. I think he will surprise a lot of people. He won't go in the top few rounds - even if he wins the Heisman. Teams will be a little hesitant to put him on the payroll. The natural physical attributes just aren't there. But one thing you can't measure are persistence, drive, a competitive spirit, the will to win and to overcome obstacles. Kellen gets an A+ on those across the board.
I think we will be watching Kellen on Sunday afternoons.
