Considering Sales Position in SBO

Seriously considering a sales position in SBO, is there anyone who can give me some serious, no BS advice on this division and this company and a potential sales position there?

Save all the bitching and moaning for your manager or your spouse, I just want a nuts and bolts take on what is going on at this company and the prospects of joining this company from the outside--selling the SBO line.

Thanks

If you are trying to get your foot in the door in med sales its okay. The new product the SBO line came out with is getting recalled so you would be selling primarily cannulated screws. Every other company under the sun has pretty much the same or better. No plates, no nails, no staples. Not much of anything. There is a hand plating system but most hand cases are fixed with k wires or just screws so good luck on that. They are supposed to come out with a distal radius plate in a couple of years. Oh and management is really bad. The CEO is in over his head. If you can stick it out for 2 + years to try and go to a real company then it might not be a bad idea.

one of the highest turnover rates in the business but many of the med device companies are filled with former OsteoMed reps. Its a good place to start because they will hire almost anyone. When you start you are too new to figure out how stupid they are. You will figure it out sooner or later. It took me 6 months to figure it out. Takes some 2 yrs but everyone eventually figures it out. Ask the hiring manager how many people have had the territory in the last 5 years. If he says less than 3 he is lying.

They use threats and fear mongoring to try and get you to make quota. It doesn't matter how. They want you charging for countersinks and drills even if not used. They want you to charge for everything under the sun regardless if its ethical. If you don't you will be fired. They have a quick trigger for firing people and the corporate office sits back and gloats about it.

Just screws? Nothing else?

At all?

What about the rest of the products they claim to sell on their website etc?

Any positives or upsides to joining Osteomed?

The rest of their products are kind of gimmicky and arent as common of procedures. The talar fit is really a hoax and doesn't work. The interflex is for hammertoes and their are several other and quite frankly better alternatives out there. The Reflexion is a total toe replacement which is extremely controversial. A fusion is a much more reliable procedure. That is about it. Their foot plating system either is already recalled or will be shortly because it was so poorly designed they didn't want the liability any longer. A big swing and a miss that set the company back for 2-5 yrs. If they can recover and come out with a better tray than maybe you have a chance. I don't think they are going to try another foot plating though. So pretty much cannulated screws is the way the few reps in the company doing well succeed. Its a grind but it could work out for you if you get a little luck and hard work. If you have any better offers take them because OM is a pretty miserable place to work. You can see the attitude of the corporate office towards reps on here. Its the same when you work there.

Interesting insight.

Thank you.

What does the average SBO rep make? High? Low? Middle?

Throw me some numbers here.

Hours? Similar to trauma? More like pharma? Somewhere in the middle?

Low - $40k; Middle $70k; High $160k; most people make $50-80k but there a few outliers making in the $150k range. Very difficult to do but it can be done with a little luck.

hours are in between pharma and trauma. Not close to trauma but a little more than pharma.

Good stuff.

Any other words of wisdom?

I worked there way too long over 8 years its an easy job and you can waste your days days away doing nothing. the managers have no idea what goes on and as long as you put so/so numbers nobody will mess with you. the company, products & managment suck!! so if you have no goals, no self worth or respect you will fit right in. in the late 90's it was great, now it is loooooserville!!!!

Good place to start and get your feet wet in medical device sales. Management is absolutely terrible and the products are all "me too." It's a dead end. Osteomed is nothing more then a stepping stone. With that said: the compensation is decent and the products are good enough that they can be sold with a little hustle. You will not make a career here but can get your foot in the door and collect a decent paycheck depending on your territory.

Seriously, this is the worst place possible to get feedback on the OsteoMed Opportunity. All of these post are from losers that couldn't hack it. There is no recall. Again, these post are from loser reps that have no idea what's going on today at OsteoMed.
Is OsteoMed perfect? No far from it but we continue to get better every day. Good comp plan, company pays for your gas and expenses, company matched 35% of your 401K contribution. Benefits are good not great. In today's environment, it's a great opportunity.
It's too bad you are looking on this site for real advice. This is a site for losers to bash the company they either got fired from or left due to their ineptness. They commiserate with fellow losers and feel better about themselves. These are people with low self esteem and most are on unemployment.

The previous post is a perfect example of the attitude from corporate about reps. Do you really think that some of these reps didn't leave for greener pastures. If you look around the Medical Device Industry it is filled with former OsteoMed reps who are doing well now. You are trying to tell us that selling cannulated screws for a non gpo company is a great situation? If you look at the turnover at OM then you can see that most people "can't hack it" as you would say. Have you ever thought that they don't want to "hack it". Why would you want to try and "hack it" if a better opportunity comes along. Hey buddy, you keep making $75k a year with your expenses paid. I made $220k with no expenses last year. Expenses only account for about 15k a year so you do the math. You keep loving OsteoMed and being poor. I left and I'm making money now.

Thanks, Dave Kelly. I remember you raving about the Osteomed Opportunity at the 2005 NSM and then you gave up this wonderful "opportunity" for a tiny dental software about a year later. You begged to come back and took over SBO. How's it done since you've returned, by the way?

If the opportunity was so great you wouldn't have one of the worst turnover rates in the industry. And who is hiring these pathetic reps anyway? Oh yeah, the pathetic RM's. Face the fact that Walt has mismanaged Osteomed and its only opportunity now is to be bought out.

Make sure they show you the actual sales numbers for the territory you are interviewing for. Take a close look to the previous 3 months of sales.

Osteomed RM's are notorious for exaggerating the potential of the territory. Many times the previous rep leaves due to a dramatic downturn in the business.

Do ask to see the previous 2-3 years overall sales numbers to get a better understanding of what overall you're getting yourself into with this job. Ask about the breakdown of upper and lower extremity business, residency programs in the territory, local cadaver workshops performed and ask for the regional mgr's overall knowledge of the territory. The answers you receive will show you or tell you how involved they were, if the answers are all BS, then you'll know that you're walking in a very lonely job with minimal mgmt help.

Also realize that Ryan Harris(Lead OM Recruiter out of FL) fabricates all his jobs wit hthe tag line "it's one of the top territories in the country" and "you'll make well into the 6 figure salary, probably 150K you're second year if not you're first year with the residual business established". If it was such a great job, why's it open then Mr. Harris? A buddy of mine got a call from Ryan about a job in which he stated the exact same things and this territory(Inland Empire of Southern California) wasn't producing enough to make $60K per year. But by his numbers you'd be making $120K - $150K per year, and OM doesn't have the bag in order to double your salary in one year during this economic time. But don't believe me, take the job and you'll find out for yourself that the grass is greener on the side in which you stand.

But then again the next posting on here will be by Dave Kelly or a regional trying to keep his job before 2014 when everything becomes a lot tougher for the smaller companies. Oh whoops did I mention that and how ObamaCare is going to cut deep into your profit margins causing massive paycuts to the reps in orer to play with the big boys. All the top medical device companies are making changes now to acclimate to this, so should OM. Walt, Toby, Phil, Cristy T., Lynne G., Keith H., Dave D. do any of you have something to say to change this guys opinion on taking this job? I didn't think so...

D'Ambrosio should stop posting on this site. He is such a moron. Heckman is just as bad. I think the corporate postings on here are split between 3 guys. D'Ambrosio, Heckman and Kelly. Go back to watching your kids or yelling at your reps to produce or whatever it is that you managment (overhead for the company) people do all day. Management at OM is so bad, I can guarantee if you fired all of them nothing would change in terms of numbers. It may slightly go up actually. OM has one of the worst middle and upper management in the U.S. for any company or any industry. The ship is sinking, not sure how they have hung on this long to be honest.
