Congressional Budget Office: Options for Reducing the Deficit

Ending Enrollment in VA Medical Care for Veterans in Priority Groups 7 and 8. Veterans who seek medical care through Veterans Health Administration (VHA) are placed in categories 1-8, this is based off disability status and income. This proposed change would close off any veteran in group 7 and 8 giving them less coverage even with another insurance and end the help from the VA that they are used to having. For a facility like the hospital this could make more inflow of veterans if they could not get into a normal doctor or if they have a miner medical issue.

The hospital should hold an open meeting to discuss the proposed change and the effects it will have on the healthcare community and the hospital itself. The hospital will have some changes when this goes into effect, we will start getting more veterans in need of care because they do not have a personal care provider (PCP). We will need to make sure we are prepared to take on more patients and assist in setting them up with a new (PCP). The hospitals discharge planning and social workers can assist with finding new healthcare if needed and can also assist in finding a new provider if veteran patient needs help doing so. With hospitals taking on this role or assisting in this role we can help mitigate the negative effects of the changed health assistance.

This proposed adjustment can create some issues with the new Veterans that would be in categories 7 and 8. They are promised assistance through the VA and will no longer be getting that assistance. Thankfully those already being seen will be able to stay there, this will help the flow when this comes into effect. With the help of hospitals and other healthcare facilities we should be able to assist those still in need as they come up with little to no negative effects.
