Computer Question

Our computers currently have Internet Explorer v6.0 which is two or three versions behind the update. So far behind that most current web sites don't even support the version we use. If you download the current version of IE it will not allow you to communicate with the company intranet. Has anyone tried downloading another browser such as Firefox or Chrome?

Paraphrasing a friend who was in charge of the entire department that support you. They are not into having the latest version. Their goal is to have the most stable version which they can support you. With thousands of laptops deployed worldwide, you should understand why there is no good reason to have to have the coolest and latest version installed.

Spend $350 and get yourself a netbook or mobile phone plus wireless internet service for your personal use and save your Merck Model-T computer for Merck. It will be better and faster and will help you keep searching for jobs while on the job. Why you would want your computer history available for Merck to download is beyond me. Merck doesn't think that you need to be on the internet unless it is for companyy-sponsored business. I bet that the top-most folks in the company share neither your concern nor your version of software/hardware.

Simple question: has anyone installed an alternate browser. If mother Merck wants to peek in and look at the two caterers I use and two news sites I view, none of which support IE6, then they can look all they want. I'm just sick of having to use my iPhone to order food

Then install Mozilla Firefox ( stable version, not the latest beta buggy version) in order to order from these two indispensable caterers. There is a log file created each day which record everything you do and upload to Merck. They have other worst offenders to worry about which crash laptops all the time. Don't put any add-on's. Be sure your manager loves you very much. Or it will be used against you down the road. Be sure to set the security level to the highest.

Or as the pp said, buy an used netbook for less than $200 to keep Mother from spying on you. But then most older netbooks have XP installed and slower.

Lastly, choose your battle wisely. Use what you have. I am sure there are other caterers available. I cannot believe someone would design a web site not supporting IE 6.0 as if they want to exclude those customers. Call them and complain about the design flaw or oversight.

True and reasonable and sounds exactly like the the former president of Egypt.

This is President Mubarak speaking again. My friend said reps kept asking him why they could not have Windows 7 or whatever the latest OS installed. His answer, the older version is stable and well tested. They know what usual problems the reps would encounter. Put the latest OS in and new issues would arise. Printer driver may not work. Connectivity setting may have to be changed. Some re-training may have to be done, in a classroom or by DVD and the cost involved. The rep asking for Windows 7 is thinking for himself as a geek. My friend is thinking more globally.

Geek-thinking rep or globally-thinking friend, in the end it doesn't make any difference.

As long as you're connected to the Merck Intranet, go to 'Programs" click on "Citrix" and then choose " Program Neighborhood Agent" it will then allow you to use Internet Explorer 8.0 from the "My Apps" drop down menu. I know it's not Firefox or Google Chrome but it's better than I.E. 6.0.

Good idea unless you are a conspiracy theorist and don't care for Merck keeping a log of which site you are visiting through intranet. If not, this is a great solution.

Let me assure you with 100% absolute metaphysical certitude that Merck does indeed keep a log of which sites you visit. They also keep a log of every phone call you make on your company cell phone and which tower transmits the call. Put the company cell phone in a drawer and have your Merck calls forwarded through to your personal cell phone. At least that eliminates one of Big Brother's bullshit tactics, not that it really matters. We're all out of a job soon anyhow.

Don't forget wearing an aluminum foil hat to avoid detection by Merck with the GPS they implant in you during the hiring physical exam. :)

I know we'll all be out of a job soon when my manager "casually" called me at 4:45 p.m. while I was at my last appointment, saying he just wanted to chat and see how was I doing. Here I was, waiting for the customers to come by at a clinic and this a**hole wanted to say hello? Give me a break.

OMG...most people do it the other way around. Personal calls to company cell. Guess thats the most telling.

Why would anybody forward personal calls to a company cell? Believe me, in this day one cannot be overly paranoid about Big Brotha Merck and the monitoring going on. Its unbelievable the resources devoted to this activity at corporate.

I think the resources are being spent in an effort to achieve a corporate objective: the reduction of payroll. Whatever it takes to fire and push reps out the door is considered a cost of doing business around here.
