Company Cars?

Why doesn't the company offer company cars? I have been working with them for @#$$ years now and my car has almost 100,000 miles on it! I am NOT going to buy a new car because I don't want to use my allowance money, but I am afraid of getting stuck somewhere and my territory is out in the boondocks.

How does everyone else feel about having a company given car vs using your car? My other choice is to use my wife's car but she gets about 14 miles to the gallon and I would probably be losing money with that.

Just curious. I may have to start looking around for a company that will give me a car!

Welcome to the new realty- just do what you are doing until you can do better .Many former Big Pharma reps would love to be in your position now. At least you have a job.
The Jobmarket is still tough and many people would take anything just to feed their family
The good old days are over for the most part.

WHEN HR CALLED ME TO SEE HOW EVERYTHING WAS, (BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE DROPPING LIKE FLYS) I TOLD THEM I THOUGHT THE CAR ALLOWANCE AND MILEAGE WAS PRETTY CHEAP AND I WAS TOLD THAT "PUBLICIS WASN'T HERE TO SUBSIDIZE YOUR PERSONAL CAR AND THAT MANY PEOPLE WOULD TAKE THE JOB WITH NO ALLOWANCE OR MILEAGE"

This is exactly right. It is an employers market . Employers don't have to do anything extra
because there is always someone willing to take your job if you are not happy-Sad but true

THEY CAN AFFORD IT, THEY DON'T WANT TO AFFORD IT THAT'S ALL. HOW CAN OTHER CONTRACT COMPANIES AFFORD CARS OR HIGHER CAR ALLOWANCES?

Publicis doesn't provide company cars to keep itself competitive in the cso market. Oh...and there's a button on your keyboard that says caps lock. Kindly press it for sanity's sake because posting in caps makes you look like a dumb twat.

What is the avg per mile that they pay?

18 CENTS A MILE, AND $600 A MONTH CAR ALLOWANCE WHICH IS ALSO TO GO TOWARDS GAS, WHEN I ASKED WHAT ABOUT MAINTENANCE AND NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR I WAS TOLD "WE'RE NOT HERE TO SUBSIDIZE YOUR PERSONAL CAR" BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE OUT OF WORK I WAS TOLD PEOPLE WOULD TAKE THIS JOB WITH NO MILEAGE OR CAR ALLOWANCE SO SHUT THE "F" UP AND DO YOUR JOB.

I'm having my taxes done next week,so totalled up reimbursement for miles, plus the $500 a month car allowance, and after subtracting that from the total miles driven x the .56 cents a mile that the IRS allows,I also have a $9000 tax write off! Last tax season this saved me from owing the IRS,to getting a $2500 refund!Ask your accountant about this.It really is a better deal this way than a company car, which you also have to pay a set amount each month for personal use.Buy a decent car,and its paid for in the first 2 years!

WHAT ARE YOU ON CRACK? EVERY 2 YEARS OR 65K MILES YOU GET A NEW COMPANY CAR. SOMETHING GOES WRONG WITH THE CO CAR YOU BRING IT IN THEY TALK TO FLEET IT'S FIXED. SOMETHING GOES WRONG WITH YOUR PERSONAL CAR FOR INSTANCE TRANSMISSION GET YOUR CREDIT CARD OUT.
AND YOU DON'T GET 56 CENTS A MILE (WHICH BY THE WAY WAS 55.5 LAST YEAR) YOU GET THE DIFFERENCE OF THE 55.5 CENTS MINUS 18 CENTS (19 CENTS LAST YEAR BUT THEY REDUCED TO 18 BECAUSE GAS WENT DOWN LOL)
I KNOW PEOPLE LIKE YOU THOUGH PROBABLY WANT TO BE A BIG SHOT DRIVE A BMW OR MERCEDES.

Here is my opinion. I prefer car allowance and the 18 cents a mile. When the contract ends I will still have my car. I don't want to be jobless and carless and I don't want to have to buy a car when I am unemployed. I lease my car so I don't care if I use it a lot for work as I turn it in every 3 years. Since the car is new my only expenses are minor.( oil change and maybe a tire or 2) If I exceed my mile allowance it will only be a few hundred $. It I owned my car it would be different as I would be concerned about all the wear and tear.

RIGHT, THEN YOUR TERRITORY MUST BE THE SIZE OF A POSTAGE STAMP BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH THAT YOU CAN'T GO OVER YOUR MILEAGE.
YOU JUST PROVED MY POINT, I'M SURE YOU WANT TO BE A BIG SHOT AND DRIVE A BMW OR MERCEDES

What is up with the all caps? Hit the damn button.

I'M TRYING TO GET THROUGH TO THE MORON THAT THINKS A CAR ALLOWANCE IS BETTER THAN A COMPANY CAR.

NOW THERE IS THE EXCEPTION I.E. GENENTECH USED TO GIVE $750 A MONTH PLUS 55 CENTS A MILE THEN THEY WENT TO COMPANY CARS MANY SMALL BIOTECHS GIVE LIVEABLE ALLOWANCES AND MILEAGE
THE ALLOWANCE WOULDN'T BE BAD IF THEY GAVE US A GAS CARD OR REASONABLE MILEAGE.

Advantage to company cars: It isn't your car. If it breaks down, they fix it. If you don't need an additional car, it's a nice benefit, even if you have to pay a reasonable cost for personal miles ... plus if you don't have a personal car, you can also skip buying auto insurance. I had a company car and was single for 12 years and it was sure nice never to pay for insurance or a car payment.

Disadvantage to company car: Limited selection. If you already have a car, well, you either need to sell it, park it, or limit it for personal use.

Advantage to car allowance: If you already have a car (especially if paid for), it's a nice way for you to rent your car to the company and with a 55.5c per mile IRS reimbursement, it might be worthwhile in non-taxable income and tax deductions. You get to choose the car you want to drive (within company limits, for example, they might not like that 1988 Dodge Dart or the 2012 Corvette convertible you drive).

Disadvantage to car allowance: It's your car and you're depreciating it quicker by driving it an extra 50-150 miles a day on company business. If it breaks down, you're on your own and may have to rent a car for the day. If you have high car payments or a gas guzzler, the car payments from the company may not cover the cost of the car -- and when there is rising gas prices, the reimbursement tends to trail gas prices but they seem to quickly roll them back when prices fall. Also, you're at the mercy of the reimbursement system the company uses and it could change.

I make between 7 and 9 hundred a month tax free. Paid for Camry. I bank 1/3 for tire, maintenance, new car fund. But this thing will go for 100K more miles. I would hate to go back o company car
