company car vs allowance

new rep starting in July.. just wanted to hop on here and see if anyone can provide details on Alkermes' company car selection and also what the alternative car allowance package looks like. First company I've been at that gives you the choice. Appreciate it, look forward to joining the team.

Congratulations on joining the company. Your HR contact will be able to answer those questions for you.

If you select the car reimbursement, you will receive a fixed monthly payment plus cents per miles, which varies for each territory. Ask for your territory breakdown so you can make an informed decision.

No brainer to get the company car. The reimbursement is paltry compared to what it was before the fleet option. Your personal car becomes an even faster depreciating investment. $100 a month to drive the wheels off, including personal miles, is incredible.

Cool, $100 is not bad at all. My last company was $150 but I’ve heard others as high as $200/mo then it almost makes more sense to use your own vehicle at that point. Thanks for that!

your choice will be limited to the dozens of fleet cars in storage from employees who recently left... not a choice of a new one.

Good point… another reason to choose the allowance and get the car you want, unless you truly don’t care what you’re spending hours upon hours in on a weekly basis

Depends on your geography and if you have a car payment.

most get a little over $1,000/mo when you factor in the base allowance with mileage reimbursement. That’s more than enough to cover car payment, insurance and general maintenance on the car you really want.. also factor in the $100/mo company car deduction they take from your paycheck. It all pretty much evens out either way.

I’ve done both options. If you have any size to your territory you will put miles on your car quickly, making it even more of a depreciating investment.

Depending on how analytical you are, you should calculate days per day of use…what you paid for the car once it’s paid off, plus maintainence, gas, insurance, etc…minus the reimbursement. Take that number Against what you sell it for.

Paying only $1200 year for one of our car options including all gas and all maintainence put me way ahead of driving my personal car into the ground in return for a reimbursement that doesn’t come close my cost over the life of the car.

I suggest you take neither and run away as fast as possible from this sinking ship. It has become a hell hole of micromanaging and metrics. Not a good job anymore unless you are really desperate.

Did you miss your monthly injection again? Don’t worry your mommy will drive you and hold your teddy bear when you get it. And, if you are a good boy, she will get you ice cream on the way home.
