car and other stuff

I was just offered a position with a $500 car allowance. I'm coming from big pharma where the car is provided so I'm not quite sure how to go about this... I'd love to hear what everyone else does. Do you lease, buynew or buy used? The contract is only for a year and I live in a rural territory- those of you that currently work for publicist, what are you doing and why? THANKS!

Also, do the contracts offer trips, president's club etc? We didn't really go over that in the interview. Once the contract ends, how likely is it to be put on a new contract?

I have only worked contract...and some contracts provide a car, but I always had my own car...so did not need to get a new one for my current contact. The car expense is meant to cover your payment, if any, insurance and maintenance. There is additional reimbursement for gas, currently .17 per mile. After the contract ends...and some end prematurely, (most of my team on AZ resp. just got laid off...5 months early) you may or may not get placed on a new contract. You would have to reapply for the new job...with Publicis, it doesn't mean you are automatically placed. Sometimes it is months between contracts and you have to interview just like the first time, however, there is usually preference for a displaced rep. if their performance was good on the prior contract. As far as trips and so on, it depends on the company that contracts with Publicis...some big pharma Companies are more generous than others. I don't know your financial situation, but I would be hesitant to get into a large car payment...make sure you can afford it on unemployment.

I was already on the respiratory contract...part of our team was laid off...after we were all scheduled for training next week. Not sure if we will keep our respiratory products too.

The $500 is taxed so plan on about 300 plus and that covers everything ins, oil, tire, and repairs. I would also get some kind of road side plan. I wouldn't go anywhere near a new car. Contracts can end at anytime. I have seen 2 year contract start laying off at 6 months and everyone gone by 9 months. Also all the miles you would put on it would depreciate a new car way to quick. Get a good used car that will meet your work and family needs. Remember every dollar you save on your car puts money in your pocket. My last Contract I got a Saturn Ion about 6 years old was avg 35 miles a gallon. Paid about 4,000 for it. we got paid .51c a mile and I had a big rural territory. It was putting an extra $1000 in my pocket every month. I could of sold it for almost what I bought it for 12 months later. I was on another contract got a 12,000 Ford Taurus about 2 years old drove it for 2 years then sold it for about 6,000. Just watch out you don't pay a lot and then drive the car into the ground. For your other question most contract don't do P club anymore. When they did it used to be like top 2 reps on each contract went. I have been rehired by contract companies I have worked for in the past, but most the time you have to reapply from the outside just like everyone else. Hope that helps.

I am on the Crestor contract and the car allowance is of taxed. It is paid monthly as part of your expensed. You get the full $500.
