Can someone tell me what kind of salary/perks I could reasonable expect in outside sales position?

I'm currently interviewing for an outside sales position in the academic/research area (DM said there were no medical/hospital sales in this division). They've been really quiet about salary ranges, though, and now they want me to drive out 3 hours for a face to face interview.

I'm a little hesitant due to the lack of insight on pay and benefits. I see the 401k looks pretty good at 6% match, but I can't find much else. What kind of vehicle options do they give you? Is ~55k base (average base I see for someone with my experience (~5 years) in my area) realistic, or is this going to be one of those paltry 30k base positions? Is there any profit sharing / stock programs that you can participate in?

Right now I'm making about 65k in base + commission at my current job, so I'm not really inclined to drive 3 hours for an interview if the job is just going to pay the same or less. I do like Thermo's products better, though, so I'm not looking for a huge jump, just a reasonable one.

Thanks for any insight.

While I can't give you any specifics on this company, I can tell you that companies that are so hush hush about salary ranges and want you to drive 3 hours for an interview, are generally not good companies to work for.

It shows me that they have something to hide.

I would not go unless it was a final interview.

Not thrilled about it, but it seems like a good jump in my career, and I hate my current job

The managers are not good people, and your resume will take a hit.

First everyone will question if you were one of the criminals arrested and put in jail, then next they'll wonder if your one of the A holes

don't mistake the research division for the piece of shit immunocap division where everything sucks. research is a nice spot to be and is a pretty easy gig, but the money won't be that good. it is really an entry level gig they are looking to pay like 75k total.

because of the illegal acts the i-cap people participated in. leadership also has a reputation of being what many have called "toxic." Yeah, you can say it's all toxic, but people here go above and beyond the call of toxicity and have shredded personal lives in their pursuit of the almighty dollar. Those you sell to also tend to be aware of who they are dealing with, and the respectable ones think twice and three times before they deal with you.
