Rumor has it that RP fought hard to prevent the R&D RIFs and lost, hence his "retirement". Rather like so many of us others who have "retired" from Amgen in the last year or so!

LMFAO! What a load of BS. Merck knew what they were doing when they didn't hire him for the "impossibly big role". If he was honorable he would have quit a long time ago after realizing he was in way over his head and contributing nothing to the company.

The strategy of the last decade - lavish R&D spending and stock buy backs - has failed.

Bradway has to move the stock and that can only come from savage R&D cuts. Need weak R&D head who will not rock the boat.
