I received an offer from another company so I have decided to leave Genentech. It looks like I am going to make a lot of bonus for the first half of 2013. Do I have to work through June 30th to get the payout or do I have to be an employed by Genentech on September 15th when it is paid?

Official policy i you must be present for payout. Some states ie california the law states that if you work the entire period you get the the money. Check your state laws. DO NOT double dip it can ruin your career.

Having a start start date with one company that comes before the end date of the other is impossible to hide and is clear stealing. It will be uncovered during your background check (not at your next company) but the one after that. In most cases any future offers will be rescinded.

Again, double dipping at the company you are waiting to start right now is not a problem! But the overlap between it and Genentech will be an issue for the next job.

Im sure that there will be rude comments but the fact is that double dipping is stealing and is easily detected. Why risk your career oer a few thousand dollars?

The above poster is absolutely correct. They can find out everything in your background check. The dates you actually started and your end date and they WILL verify all of this in the background check. If you double dip you will be caught. Just safer not to do it. Also you need to put ALL of your jobs on your application. Even if you were only somewhere for a very short time or inbetween jobs. If you don't list all jobs you will be considered lying on your resume and offers can be rescinded. With technology now you can't hide anything.

I double dipped for almost a month. The company I was leaving, the manager was trying to keep me there and refused to turn in the paperwork and left me on the payroll for 3 more weeks while he kept calling me. I gave the standard two week notice, turned in my stuff and he still held out, offfering more perks, pay etc. I did not want to stay. He said later to not worry and keep the pay. I did.
