How does Biodesign compare to other tissue repair products? Are there any big advantages over competition and which product or products are its biggest competition? How is it working for this division? Any insight would be great.

The Biodesign Technology was the first Biologic material available for complex hernia repair in 1999 with the invention and patent of Cook's Surgisis Gold Material. At first there were was only one major competitor with Lifecell's Alloderm product, yet there were a lot of various problems with original Surgisis Gold material causing a lot of controversy that was played on by competing Lifecell Reps.

The new Biodesign product is an evolution of the original Surgisis Gold material and can be considered to be the most clinically published Biologic Graft on the planet. The new material's design and ability to regenerate at a quicker rate than competing cadaveric dermis products offer a huge advantage over competition but Alloderm still owns a majority of the market.

Things are changing rapidly though, there have been a variety of class-action lawsuits stemming from the Alloderm product stretching overtime and the transfer of infection from donor to patient.

Look out for the Biodesign technology in the future, Cook being a private company has a lot more manipulability over its competitors. With the advancements in stem-cell research there is a very good chance a dramatic advancement in Biologic technology can improve in the near future.
