Big Pharma Discriminates Against Older Workers

The age discrimination lawsuit filed against Abbott Labs (ABT) will be regarded as concrete evidence that the pharmaceutical industry doesn’t like older employees, even if it doesn’t succeed. Big Pharma management has a credibility problem on the age issue, particularly at Abbott.

One only needs to look at the former models hired to "sell" to figure that one out. The South is particularly guilty of the this.

The law firms should be going after the firm that chose who was to be displaced by BIG PHARMA companies, Novartis especially. The lawyers could supoena the criteria they were given by pharmaceutical companies for displacement and give "cover-up" criteria given to employees displaced by the BIG PHARMA.
Ratings for last 2 years, geography, and tenure? Right. The real criteria is:

1. Years with Novartis (equals more salary and more money paid into pension for older employees under previous pension plan.
2. Age/Wage (those older with higher salaries cost Novartis and other BIG PHARMA companies more in expenses than do newbies and young reps.

Many territories were re-mapped, company hiring for the new territory when an employee was displaced or, a younger, less tenured rep with no awards is slated to the newly created terrritory that was previously filled with older, tenured rep that was displaced. Smell something?

All lawfirms investigating for displaced employees, SUPOENA THE COMPANY THAT PROVIDED THE RECOMMENDATION TO NOVARTIS AND PHARMA COMPANIES FOR LAYOFF!

Then everyone will have their answer and can move on.

Supoena the company hired by Novartis and other BIG PHARMA companies and ask the following:

1. What did these companies ask you to accomplish?
2. What was the criteria you used to recommend job loss to Big Pharma Company?
3. Did the Big Pharma Company advise/steer you towards any specific age group or salary group to aid in your determination?
4. Were you given age of employees?
5. Were you given years of service of employees?
6. Were you given salary information of employees?

If the answers to questions 4, 5, 6, were yes, did you utilize this information to establish a way to cut older, higher paid, tenured employees and throw in a mix of younger, less tenured, employees for balance to hide the real reasoning for the Big Pharma Cuts?

Based on your answers to the previous questioning, what did you base your recommendations for displacement on?

NYDC LAW, WAKE UP! This is the direction you should be headed!

I'm getting ready to walk away from all this nonsense - the Pharma Industry. When I saw how I was being denied interviews based on my lack of "B2B" sales experience (yes, recruiters informed me of this), despite 10 years of industry sales experience and a solid track record, I realized how little value pharmaceutical sales experience holds in today's job market. I have new options outside the industry I am ready to explore. And yes, it's sales - not promotional or marketing work.

I would like to walk away too. I'm not bitter, just ready to go. I do not expect a severence, but would like to receive unemployment since I paid into the system for 20 years. I can't quit or I get nothing. Any suggestions? Everyday I am less and less motivated and it is not fair for NVS to continue to pay me if I am not willing to make the effort.

I feel the same way. If you find the answer please share it with me. I am in my 16th year and now getting hasseled for the off lable lawsuit. You can never win with this company! I have finally had it!

You do not pay into unemployment, your employer does. It is an insurance policy they pay into so that when they lay someone off they can make a claim. The company then pays a higher premium because they have people making claims against their unemployment policy. You pay into social security only.

been around 20 plus years and was retained, but honestly feel that im targeted next go around, job is much less rewarding and goals make it feel as if your being set up to fail.
dont feel like i have a choice (golden handcuffs) so will ride it out

pharma sales 20 years ago was a pinnacle type sales job..You were the company, period, in your territory..and were well paid to be...long slow slide to the dropping off samples and hoping to schedule a lunch..
The company now sees the rep as an entry level position that should last no longer than 4-6 years (they look forward to you moving on to something else)..what real career path do you have (the company doesn't look forward to boosting your pay from 'professional' to 'Sr' Professional rep or whatever cute title they give it)

i agree. it has become apparent that there is a larger corporate picture and it has nothing to do with skill level or ranking. this last layoff it became clear that novartis had a headcount and dollar figure to reduce. i know of reps who had been presidents club in 09 and slated for the same in 2010, but had a poor year in 2008 and that was the "reason" given for being displaced. this same person had been promoted to senior sales consultant in october. go figure.

20+ years and laid off because some a**hole with a big ego didn't want push back on anything. My experience and expertise never a factor in their decision. Age and $$$$. Good Luck to you guys who can remember when this industry was tops. The reps made the company. Fun was NOT a 4-letter word. Now upper management seems to think that they are actually responsible for the sales that are generated by those of us in the trenches. The same people responsible for the bad decisions that got us to this point are still in charge for some reason. We could use some true leadership especially at NPC. Still trying to figure where they get this garbage they spew at every meeting about NPC being the #1 place to work. They are truly legends in their own minds!

Agree with the above poster 25+ years with the company never lower than a 2-2 rating multiple awards and run out of the company by people who didn't exsist at Novartis two years ago. Has nothing to do with doing your job well or your performance. This OU structure was a huge mistake that Novartis will pay for, for a long time to come. For the people who have been here a long time who has your back now. No one will stand up for you because no one cares really just a number on some a-holes spread sheet based on how much you cost, if we can do it cheaper we don't care about whether or not you can sell or move business.

Been here in the OU for over 15 years and seen it go down hill so fast lately! I am trying to hold on for 2 more years, but not sure NOV will let me! They are such A holes anymore! It is sooo sad. The only positive is those that have been around know how good it used to be! I wish I could tell everyone that wants to get into pharma to stay away, but they need to work too. Sad, sad, sad!

So what happened?

I work for another company "The Family Company," we'll call it. Yeah, right. I've been at my company nearly 13 years, won multiple sales awards, mentoring awards, sustituted for my manager when he was out ill, worked evening programs, weekend programs, etc., you get the point. I had one bad quarter and now I'm being summoned along with a few other older reps for a "work review." My DM tells me that our director thinks the group of us are resting on our laurels and not working as hard as our counterparts. Yeah, right on that too. Never before as long as I've worked here has anyone been brought in for a "work review" for having a bad quarter. Hell, they just promoted a rep wh's been in the rankings basement for two years in row. Did I mention she looks like a Playboy playmate?

Of course, the paperwork needed to prepare for this review has been redundant and overwhelming, and every time we finish one project the director decides he wants it in a new format. He also informed us that this is to be done outside of our normal work hours.

We see exactly what he's doing, but I'm not sure how to proceed. Any ideas?

I think about all you can do at this point is document. I experienced the same situation and finally decided to walk--life's too short and I was fortunate enough to be able to do that. Any attorney I've spoken with is lukewarm at best in wanting to tackle the age discrimination thing. These pharma companies know exactly what they're doing and what they can get away with. In case there's a class action on the horizon, keep good records. Good luck. I know what you're going through.

Suggest you get a set of double D boobs ASAP. Your promotional skills don't count for squat.

It's all about shakin the tatas in the faces of the docs.

How did you manage to win a SALES award when you don't actually SELL anything?

You said it all about OU structure change....I hope someone goes postal on those mother fuckers....best part of Novartis is I am long gone. Best place to start is in Schaumburg, IL.
