Barrett's Esophagus with displasia

Anybody know anything about this -- like firsthand knowledge? I can look everything up on the internet, but I want to hear from someone who has been diagnosed with this and lives with this on a daily basis.

Best I can do is recommend PPIs. Used to sell Prilosec. Barrett's can be caused by acid reflux (with or without symptoms). The acid changes the cells that line the esophagus over time and can lead to cancer. Basics include the same as for reflux disease: raise head of your bed 4-6 inches, sleep on your side, no meals within 3 hours of retiring, no caffeine, no nuts, no chocolate, no citrus, no tomatoes, no milk, no peppermint, no cigarettes or other inhaled smoke products, no alcohol, lose weight. Some people who are able to follow the rules, take their meds, etc will heal. Some require long term therapy, some require surgery(pretty much mandatory if there is already cancer present).

Follow the doc's orders. I had reflux and sleep apnea together. Been on Prilosec since years before it went OTC. (Saying a little prayer for you. Let me know if you need a bigger one.)

Good advice. I take Protonix daily having had the same issues (reflux, post nasal drip now & then and sleep apnea). A very good friend who was a well known drummer died of esophageal cancer at age 61 and his widow told me regular use of a PPI would have likely prevented it. I'm fortunate to have it Rxd daily and sleep with a V Pap. I drink wine and eat tomatoes but then again, I haven't developed the syndrome. I know it can creep up on you and that stomach acid is very destructive.

I've been taking Protonix 40 mg bid for years. But I just found out I was taking it wrong (I would have thought I was smarter!). I wasn't taking it 20 minutes before the evening meal. I was taking it at bedtime. I sleep on a wedge already.

Changing a lot of things -- going through the 24 hour pH thing this coming week, then meeting with gastro to discuss "options" (his word, not mine). No PPI's for the next 5 days -- Mr. Dump is getting his thick skin ready, because I am definitely not gonna be a happy person. I'm going to go buy some of this today -- http://www.stopsacidreflux.com/ -- my daughter's boyfriend gave me the recipe, but I figure it'll be cheaper to buy it ready made. Have to go to a truck stop of all places to buy it.

One thing is for sure -- I now know why Michael Jackson liked propofol so much. No headache or anything after I woke up.

I take it once a day in the morning. If you ever have to go the 'sleep study' route, 1st they will give you a C PAP. Take it back in a week and tell them you cannot tolerate it. Then they will give you a Bi PAP. Do the same thing. FINALLY, ask about a V PAP. It's computerized and has moisturized air. Next to my woman it's the best friend I've ever had in bed.

Why would I need one? I don't snore or have sleep apnea so I don't need a cpap == Mr. Dump's is my best friend. We even almost missed a flight because he forgot to bring it. Turned that car around and got it.

My Barrett's is a result of reflux, and I've been taking PPIs for years.

You're right, I've never heard you snore once!

I used to sell a PPI too. High dose PPi RX -taken in am before eating-is what I learned from GE's and biopsy every 5 years. The progression to cancer is very rare= 2% I think.

That's what they're saying. Just had the 24 hr pH thing done -- not a real pleasant experience, but I'd rather have that than the Bravo -- several people I know had horrible pains with that sticking in their throats.

Dumper - My Mom did all the things WE mentioned in his post for her severe reflux but a key thing that helped a lot was to separate liquids and solids. She'd eat a sandwich for lunch for example and wait an hour or two and then have a cup of hot tea. For cold beverages, she'd use a straw. Somehow the use of a straw cut down on the air she seemed to be taking in while drinking cold liquids. Having tried every ppi on the market, Aciphex worked best for her.

I read a study today about Rebeprazole (Aciphex) combined with hydrotalcite for bile reflux. What the hell is hydrotalcite? I've searched to find a brand name that I can get in the US, but the only thing I've found is Talcid which I would have to order from China via EBAY and I'm not about to do that.

^Yeah. Strange. I couldn't find a US brand name either.

Hoping you get good news on the grade of the cells DD and that your doctor finds you some relief for your reflux. It's a bitch of a way to live.

In her 50's, my Mom suffered terribly from it. She started on a long path of surgeries to relieve her reflux and all it did was complicate things more. Hiatal hernia repair. Nissen fundoplication with vagotomy (bad move as it left her with chronic dumping syndrome and a form of diabetes). Surgeries for adhesions. Ileostomy. Colostomy. You name it. She was the poster child for a bad gut. And it all started from simple heartburn. :(

Well, since my gastro is basically anti-surgery, I believe we're going to try the lifestyle modification route...at least, that's what I'm planning. the cells were were consistent with Barrett's, so I'm not too worked about that at this point. I actually think eating small meals is going to make a lot of difference -- it has already. The Hiatal hernia is a pain, literally.
