Azar: we are losing control

The pandemic is as controlled as it will get. We are testing way more than any other country (50% more than next closest in tests per day)- so of course the case count is rising. But hospitalizations are way down as is the 7 day rolling death average. The vast majority of current "cases" are asymptomatic and people that are getting tested more than once after a positive test.

Even in Florida- they have 7k people hospitalized around the state- the news headlines make it seem as if the world is ending for anyone that lives in Florida. What they don't say is that they have over 70k beds statewide- and that the census is normal at most hospitals. We know exactly who is at risk of dying from Covid- those over age 65 with comorbidities. The risk of death increases significantly as you get older than 65. In NY state- which has the highest death rate (per million people) in the entire world- 33% of those that died were over the age of 90! Death from all causes when compared to previous years is virtually the same- for the most part the people that are dying are sick to begin with.

Another interesting FACT...check the CDC website regarding Covid testing. It clearly states that a positive test might not even be covid and that it could be a common cold. Factor that into the rising "cases". Another FACT...when compared to other nations that are actually testing the USA has one of the lowest death rates per million- you have to adjust the death rate for the population size. The media refuses to do this and instead just focuses on the number of deaths.

So much bullshit and misinformation in one post. Please don't spread information that you've heard on social media without checking the facts first (even if it makes you feel better or goes along with what you want to believe is true).

Would love to see you link to the CDC website where it says a common cold can cause a positive COVID-19 test. I'm sure we'll be waiting, because it doesn't say that. And as for your claim that the US has one of the lowest death when adjusted for population, I'm going to link to Johns Hopkins for you: https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/mortality

click on "deaths per 100,000" and see how high the US falls. Second only to the UK in countries currently most affected by COVID.

So true, and just like with the 1918 flu, COVID, for many, has lingering complications, possibly lasting a lifetime, including severe neurological effects including brain damage. Maybe the Grumpy Trumpy should spend more time on considering possible therapies for potentially millions of victims. This is very serious.

ha educate yourself...stay off cnn. Your link to John Hopkins doesn’t include any of the European peers like France, Italy, Spain,Ireland etc. It only includes countries that aren’t even testing. God we hire some fucking idiots.

Your welcome for the education.

I work in Florida. The situation is not good in the S. Florida area in terms of ICU beds available:

https://www.npr.org/2020/07/13/8905...lms-intensive-care-units-at-florida-hospitals

Its not as bad as NYC in April but if things don't improve, it will get there.

Again not really. Per the CDC...75% hospital bed occupancy statewide with 14.6% of those patients with a diagnosis of Covid (or suspected). Your ICU beds are at 69.7% capacity. Pretty typical census.

Florida is a big state. I'm talking S Florida area. Yes, you can convert regular hospital beds to ICU units and create temporary units but the bottom line is that things are not under control in S. Florida. We have got to get this under better control in Miami-Dade and Brower counties.

My wife is an ER Dr. in Brower County- its fine. Don't believe the media hype she is really over this. If you are over 65 take precautions like it is an exceptionally bad flu year.

Calling total bullshit on this. Your wife is not an ER doctor in Brower county, Florida...because it's Broward county, not Brower you idiot. Which means you don't even live anywhere near there or you would know the correct county name. You're just a bullshitting Trump-following idiot who doesn't listen to science for whatever reason.

Facts for you...to help your ignorance.

Florida inpatient bed census- 70%
Florida inpatient beds with covid- 17%
Florida ICU bed census- 67%

National average for inpatient bed census- 63%
National average for ICU census- 61%

Florida tracking about average for Florida (which is always higher than the national average due to age of population and number of beds).

TALLAHASSEE — Another 139 Florida residents were reported dead Wednesday from COVID-19, with the state’s weekly average of 114 daily fatalities now second to Texas for worst in the nation.

Another 9,785 confirmed cases of coronavirus also were reported, bringing Florida to 379,619 so far. There have been 5,345 deaths related to COVID-19.

The state’s daily death rate has jumped dramatically over the past two weeks to come in behind Texas, which has averaged 124 daily deaths for the past week, with a population almost one-third larger than Florida.

A month ago, Florida was averaging 33 deaths a day before cases — and fatalities — began skyrocketing in July.
