Average age.....

Right on. Sorry to say. I have been in pharma sales twenty yrs and was a pharma sales trainer. Yep, after 50, in this industy you are considered too old. I trained the new Reps who were young. They complained about the color of their company car. Oh really? I wanted to say something, but did not. I now work as a hospice consultant/sales. It is good but a dog eat dog industry!

how depressing.

So very true. I only had a couple interviews my entire career and worked for four different companies until I reached 45. After 45, I have had over 40 interviews spanning a 3 year period.
No offer. Sure I know. I am loser and do not interview well, etc.

I get an occasional temp job, but not a "job".

Note: I saved diligently, lived within my means never went on a fancy vacation or bought a new car. But this is how it goes. First you network and try like hell. No success. Refocus and set your sights lower. Finally it is minimum wage to eat.

While you merely survive you go through your emergency savings, retirement and sell what you can. When that is gone you cannot pay the mortgage and the sheriff arrives to escort you out of your home. Then you move in with a relative or a divorced friend and get the couch or little tiny room. If all goes well, you can ride the bus to work, skip lunch due to no money and sit in feeder cubicle for minimum wage.

BUT WE'RE MUCH BETTER OFF NOW THAN WE WERE 4 YEARS AGO. (YEAH RIGHT)

On my last contract with ventiv two of the repre's were over 65 years old. When I moved to a large pharma company most were over 50 and had been with company for many years. This is not the norm now. Companies want miracles from the sales team. Usually senior rep has the contacts not the young ones. depends on the company and the hiring manager. Young managers are afraid, toe the line and do what they are told. They will hire a peer. Give me a seasoned manager any day!

I'm 44, cute, blonde, athletic and have never had one problem landing any healthcare/pharma sales job. My resume & my contacts speak for themselves. I have the energy & looks of a 30-something and it helps :) Youthful attitude with stellar experience & contacts can go a long long way.
