August Bonus Checks

Representatives will receive their 2012 bonus in March, 2013 as usual. In August 2013, bonuses will be paid out for January-June numbers, then again in March 2014 for July-December. I can't help but think layoffs and half-year payouts are planned.

At least, Merck reps might actually have some incentive to work and make some money. This bonus plan is something closer to what is called "motivation" unlike the company's traditional employee unfriendly annual payout.

What a joke. My best year ever was one where I spent six months off territory. If you think sales figures reflect your efforts, you're kidding yourself. The VP Club lists always contain worthless reps that couldn't sell anything to save their lives.

Absolutely correct. However, who really things that the 15 clowns and the lazy empty headed in the salesforce will respond. What needs to happen with bonus structure is that only 20% of the group would be awarded bonuses and the money pot would be the same.

For a large corporation with all the manpower and computing power, it is funny to know it takes Merck until March or April to calculate your bonus from the year before. Similarly, it is funny to get your sales objectives sometimes by the end of the first quarter of a new year. I jokingly told my manager Merck wants to calculate how to minimize bonus payoff. He said I am too suspicious. :)

What entitles you to a bonus?

Where did you hear the change in bonus. Payout dates?

I can tell you have no idea about this industry and I must question as to why you would even be on here? The reason for the bonus calculations relates to this "Industry" years ago. Companies were paying out bonuses at the end of each quarter and representatives were jumping ship to other companies while still retaining their bonuses. Things have changed now. There are a lot of companies out there that won't pay you your Q1 bonus until you work all of your Q2. A few reasons, number they are cheap and number two it deters employees from jumping ship which doesn't make sense anymore because there are few opportunities left in this industry. As far as the quotas are concerned, same mentality, you would start looking elsewhere if you knew your numbers were going to sky rocket. In a way it creates an anti climatic response for the company but the exact opposite for the employee.

Do the math - it works out to their advantage by splitting payouts in terms of severance. Nothing is done that does not have a hidden agenda !

Sorry to say, it's the first thing that came to my mind. I think people who have been employed by other companies know this change too well. Your head is in the sand not to at least think about it. I suspect decisions were made some time ago.. or maybe they are now underway.
