Anyone else get ghosted by HR?

Heard this from many candidates now, even on the other side of the border. Abbvie will suck you into long and numerous interviews and once they decide they hire internally (which is often the case), never bother to follow up with you. Horrible HR practices and extremely unprofessional.

It is a blessing in disguise

Other side of the border - good one. Yes, it had become so common nowadays that IF they let you know it was someone else, let alone an internal candidate, I think that is a blessing.

I keep hearing similar stuff repeatedly about AbbVie over the past year or so. A new one I recently heard is HR telling candidates early on they can work out of a different non-Illinois office, draw them in, then flip and say it’s HQ only. Word spreads fast in the pharma hubs when companies pull stunts like that

Geez… I hope Karma kicks in, seriously.

If the Illinois area pharma talent pool is that limited or piss-poor, maybe they should consider remote rather than bait-and-switch tactics that quickly sour people on the company. If you move to Illinois and they cut you 2-3 years later in a company wide layoff, where are you going to go? You’re stuck with very limited pharma options. It’s the same problem with considering jobs at Lilly. Everyone in the Boston, SanFran and NY/NJ area know this is the big risk with considering relocating to Chicago or Indy, and why no one will do it.

More importantly, why would anyone ever WANT to move to those Metropolitan areas? Crime, taxes, gun control, homelessness, Demoncrats, and the list goes on.

This is a big under-discussed problem in terms of talent. Most of the good talent in the area with Pharma experience have retired or left or moved to a new industry. Look at the area’s pharma employment options 10-15 years ago. You had large employers and a deep talent pool. You had Takeda but they cut a ton, shut down and left for Cambridge MA. Baxter had a pharma division that was spun off as Baxalta and left for Cambridge MA. Horizon was around but they were bought out. Same with Hospira. What’s left? Smaller offices for Astellas and Lundbeck? That’s it. So if you get laid off, then what do you do?

Now they can’t fill jobs with good talent.

This is spot on. There is a severe Pharma experienced talent shortage in the Chicago area. There is very little talent under 55. The industry in the area kneecapped itself over the last 12 years and ate its young. Good luck trying to get someone younger from the Northeast or CA to move.
