A German newspaper reports that Johnson & Johnson is recalling thousands of hip implants 2 1/2 years after a similar recall.

Handelsblatt reports that the Adept implants made by J&J's subsidiary DePuy Orthopaedics showed a failure rate of 12 percent after seven years. It said some 7,500 of the implants were shipped worldwide between 2004 and 2011.

Johnson & Johnson representatives in Germany and the United States didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices on Thursday confirmed it had received a notice from Johnson & Johnson about the recall.

In August 2010, J&J recalled two types of DePuy ASR metal hip implants after they were linked to high failure rates. J&J has had more than 30 other product recalls since 2009.

No shit, This came out last week. You are a little late with your earth shattering news. What happened with your durom cup? I forgot, it was surgeon error implanting them. Z never has any issues I'm sure. I have seen some Smith Nephew Birmingham with Pseudo tumors as well. Overall, we were given bad information from corporate on this type of implant design. Every company has some products that fail,so don't throw stones.

The OP was a news report on something that's relevant to this company board. It's not throwing stones. It's not meant to put you on the defensive. It's simply news.

But you're right, it's an issue that's largely beyond the control of the sales rep. It's not your fault the shit got pushed on you to push on to the doctor to push on to the patient. It's true, every company has some products that fail. Durom was one of them. That shit is unfortunate. That's somebody's family member whose soft tissue was destroyed by pseudotumors, whose synovial fluid looks like motor oil, and who has now lost their mobility or more because the people they entrusted with their health let them down.

I spend a shit-ton of my time working sales, covering cases, and counting commission dollars. It doesn't hurt to step back now and then and do some critical thinking about what kind of role we play in other people's lives. Ignorance is not so blissful when it's someone else's ignorance that causes you to get a hip disarticulation. It's good to be informed and it's good to practice critical thinking. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

A little late? It came out last week. Somebody is extremely defensive and affected. And no one threw stones, it's a report genius. But then again, it is ANOTHER black eye for J&J.

Just revised an SROM with a sleeve on it. It was metal on poly and no signs of fretting at the taper junction, however the patient had massive pseudotumors along the femur. I'm wondering if the sleeve against the stem could have been cause of the ALVAL response.
