Amgen remorse?

About a year or so ago, I left the big pharma company I had been working for. I was interviewing with Amgen to sell Prolia at the heart of the terrible economy. I was made an offer and beat out all the other candidates. But I was hesitant to join Amgen b/c the product was not yet approved and I know how delayed the FDA can be. I think I became afraid to join Amgen (or any other pharma company) b/c I was afraid to be laid off. So, I declined the offer and decided to go back to school and get a degree working with patients in a rehab setting. I will be an Allied Health Professional by next year, which I hope will offer more career stability. However, I often question my decision as my new career won't be as lucrative (maybe $75k average in career, $65k to start) and I won't get a free car or gas, chance to win trips, pension etc. I've spent alot of money going back to school and will come out with a normal 9-5 job with a basic 401k. I sometimes think I may be right back in sales in a few years!

I guess I am saying that I have remorse about not accepting the Amgen job and want to know if you think I did the right thing. I'm trying to make myself feel better about this! Thanks! :)

What will the answer get you?

Yes, you did the right thing...how do you feel now?

No, you made a mistake.

Life is change, life is taking chances, and honestly if you are wrestling like this you likely did not have the emotional fortitude to handle the tough sales environment. Life isn't about money. I suggest you spend some time with a counselor to help you find peace and inner strength.

OP here...well you're right. Maybe I just need inner peace with my decision/new direction. I had been wondering how Prolia sales were doing...there's alot of negativity about the product on this board and it's hard to tell what's true and what's not sometimes. And yes, money isn't everything, but it sure makes life easier! Thanks everyonw for your replies!

I think you made the right decision. Amgen is not the company it used to be- With the addition of the bone health sales force, it has turned into the same big pharma company you left. The bone health unit is a primary care sales force so it's not like we are specialty reps. And, considering they hired "the best of the best", you would be perplexed at the way they present information to us at meetings...it is like we are brand new in the industry and haven't ever sold before. Yeah, it's more money but is it really worth it? If you love what you are doing and feel good about it, then you have 100% made the right decision.

I try to be happy with the money, but I know its short.term. I too left big P, I gambled and it hasnt worked out yet. It's the same here as what I left. But back at big P, they are true to themselves.

This place SUCKS , it is riddled with BS and Managers who are all over the place and sitting in my front seat MICROMANAGING us like first year sibs, we were lied to through and through.
