Am I a candidate for a pharmaceutical sales position?

Hello everyone. I am looking for a professional opinion. I am interested in obtaining a pharmaceutical sales position and would like to know if I am qualified. First, I am a 34 year old male with an associates degree in liberal studies and bachelors degree in biology. From 1995-2009, I was employed at a fitness gym where I was a membership sales consultant as well as a very successful personal trainer with many long-term clients. After graduating college, I was eager to quickly obtain employment and acquired a sales position at a reputable car dealership. I have been in this industry now for 9 years and have obtained expert certification in my position and have documented sales success as well as documented testimonials from satisfied customers. When I interviewed 5 years ago for a pharma job, I got to the third interview with GSK and was informed that I was not chosen because the sales manager wanted a veteran to fill the position but as a whole I was a gentleman and a promising candidate. I am also looking to take the Pre-hire CMR certification as I feel I honestly need a refresh and I think it shows ambition as well. Am I a good candidate in your opinion? Do I need to apply for a contract sales position first? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Don't listen to the two previous posts - they are flat out wrong. I've been in this business for many years and have seen all kinds of people be brought on board. It sounds like you made it pretty far with you previous interview. Stay at it, keep sharpening your interview skills, network, be professional, and something will come your way.

I agree to ignore the 2 negative responses. I would carefully consider any CMR courses if they cost you anything. Don't waste your money. Many companies want to train you some want you experienced but others will want to mold you their own way. Keep going, you'll get something good. Have you worked with a recruiter at Medcepts yet? That's a dumb question, or you wouldn't be here searching for help, you'd be hired! I got 2 great jobs from them over the last 10 years. They have a division for w2 jobs and 1099. Tell them you want a w2 or get with products in the fitness area that would match your knowledge base and relationships and if you are good at sales, your commissions would be WAY more than w2 payment. The only problem is, if you are TOO good, the company might want to make you a w2 employee and pay you less. Watch your contracts to protect yourself!
