Aetna may be history soon

Memo today:

The contract expires with Aetna in April and they are in talks with 2 other health insurance companies.

The move if they go forward will save 440 million in health care cost

Here is a little item to watch out for, if and when you leave Amgen. When I left, I got COBRA for 18 months. I believe the payments were still handled by Aetna. A friend had told me that when the COBRA expired, I was entitled to CalCOBRA, which is a state mandated program. However, when it came to the finish line for the COBRA, I was told that since Amgen funded their own health insurance, I wasn't eligible for CalCOBRA. Begin a mad scramble to get my own policy. Don't fall into that situation.

I was told a few months ago that the average cost per employee's family was over $12,000
if this is true our company is stupid

Who cares, they are a bad company, they refused to pay for a sex change for my significant other! They are breaking the California laws

Lining up for Obama Care. If they don't provide insurance, we all get on the govt plan.

What big companies will shift the employee burden to the the National health care system in 2014?

Everyone will be pissed but Amgen will save over a billion per year by refusing to insure with medical coverage. I do not see how all this is going to work?
