Adderall shortage???

Was just watching the news in the Kansas City area, and they said that the manufacturer has "reached it's limit of a component of Adderall set by the FDA" and that it won't be available until the middle of next year! What the heck?? Any truth behind this???

There is a shortage but I think moreso on the 20mg Adderall. I've been on Adderall 20mg 2xday for my ADD. My shrink had to increase dosage to 25mg 2xday just to make sure that my Rx could be filled. For some reason I think it's based on calendar year. I thought that after the new year that the clock resets and they can go back to making it available again.

I take Adderall XR 30mg, and have been having a very difficult time filling it because of the shortage. I accepted generic one time, and it is definitely NOT as effective. There is a CVS in our time that doesn't even carry the branded product because they said, "We just don't have the shelf space." Is that even legal for a pharmacy to do that??

I just want my generic IR back! I'm completely useless without it!

Pharmacies are not legally bound to carry it, sorry. Not to mention it's hard for them to procure and their costs for that product have increased seven-fold, according to the first Pharmacist to explain the situation to me. So why would they carry it? Even the generic cost has risen on their end, but not on ours. They are taking a hit by selling it vs. Vyvanse or others.

This happened to pain patients with ER/IR forms of oxycodone last winter thru spring (maybe longer...), mostly in the southwest where there were problems with pill mills. People went weeks without pain meds and ended up in bad withdrawal if they couldn't get back to their docs to change their scripts.

Some CVS stores had Oxy on back-order for over 2 months and stopped ordering. Walgreen's wouldn't tell people over the phone if it was stocked - they had to go in to each store with script and driver's license in hand, to find out. I heard a few stores had been robbed at gun-point - don't know if that's true and not in the news. So again, they don't have to carry it and can refuse to fill your script at their discretion/comfort.

My personal belief is that both meds have been diverted, over-prescribed in large quantities, then sold/bought thru dealers to a heavy extent. So the FDA/DEA decided to cut out the amounts that had been reported during arrests, OR more low-income families were insured this year thru the states and young adults were allowed to jump back on parents' insurance - meaning way more people could finally afford to have needed scripts filled. Either way, demand outweighs supply for more heavily regulated/commonly written meds.

If anyone else has a better understanding, love to hear it!
