Genentech had the good fortune and luxury of 3 blockbuster drugs hitting the market over a short time period. The success allowed for a large margin for error on all projects, launches, people, etc. for many years that followed.
The three successful products also gave the company and individuals a false reality that everything they touched would turn to gold. Hitting the reset button makes complete sense as Genentech needs to position itself to be competitive. They have miscalculated Tecentriq's impact in the market and based years of budgetary decisions off it's potential success. The pipeline is finally being viewed realistically and not artificially pumped up to employees. It was a fantastic ride! Take what you've learned (good/bad) and make an impact and difference at a new organization.
