While I am convinced that networking is the best way to land a job, (it worked for me) there are several other things I would highly recommend doing. Linkedin is an excellent idea and don't be afraid of creating a profile, most all of the ivory tower types in East Hanoi have one. Dan Vasella's is rather rudimentary but it's there. It's an excellent way of networking as it multiplies the people you know with the people others know. Also there are head hunters who read Linkedin and want to connect with you. Have a professional picture taken to post on your page and put some time into the content. Essentially this is a resume on line with head hunters and others having the opportunity to get a look at you and your skills. Join some of the groups and you will see job postings for pharma, biotech and devices.

While the unemployment rate is in the 9 percent range....the unemployment rate for college grads is about half of that so don't get discouraged. I found plenty of evening jobs available which can help you pay the bills and give you time to interview during the day.

Never let the bastards get you down.

Good tips, I agree that the networking aspect is crucial. Also, the biggest mistake some made after the last downsizing was to assume that the only thing they could do was remain in pharma. Those who are doing the best financiallly (from former reps that I know) have gotten out of the industry. Stress levels have gone down and salaries have gone up. You do not have to settle

WHat industries did they get into??

So glad I made the cut last year! It is never easy getting cut, even though I wanted it. But now I'm done with it and have moved on. You will, too! If you have a great resume, references and interview well, you will get a job. There are a lot of device and pharma jobs out there. If you want a device job, some how talk about a direct sale in your resume...if you have such experience that you can highlight and play up. You might even have to take a med device job selling things from a catalog (hospital supplies or orthopedic supplies) which would totally stink, but then you can get that experience and get a better job in the future. I found another job in less than 2 months from when I started looking. If you are persistent, you will too!

IF YOUR OVER 50 YOU WILL NOT FIND A JOB PERIOD, I'VE HAD EXACTLY 4 INTERVIEWS ALL YEAR

The tantrum-throwing guy who keeps typing in caps to object to being old and not getting interviews really needs to pay attention to what others are saying. After the last lay off, many of my friends were laid off as was I. We are all working, and about 60% of us are over 55, most male. Someone asked what the victims did--what I can remember, started own businesses, returned to old jobs (one was a nurse, one a PA) device sales, real estate sales, consulting, administration for HMO's, promotion for large Health Care organizations, and some in pharma although more moved away than not. All I can say is that the fellow who whines everytime someone mentions finding a job demonstrates exactly why he will not get the interview, and will whine until he collects SS!
