I'll say the quiet part out loud: we really had to lower the bar for entry when we went from 2 divisions when I started in the OLD, and I mean OLD days of early 1990s, to I-cant-even-remember-how-many-divisions just 6 or 7 years later. My Phase II class had alumni from military academies and schools like Michigan, UNC, and Cornell. We had an ex-nurse, a high school science teacher, and an entrepreneur. One or two Junior Military Officers rounded out the class. 

When we went to the more is better approach, we had to cast a wide net. That's when the Tuesday to Thursday, 10-2 lifestyle started. And we became rife with people that you described in your post.
