Performance firings without a PIP

JnJ conducted a significant layoff targeting employees who received poor ratings for two consecutive years. There was no Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) or prior warning given; affected individuals were simply notified via a phone call that their employment was terminated.

Some of these individuals were rockstars, boasting over 20 years of experience at JnJ. Occasionally, unforeseen circumstances can arise within a territory, causing numbers to plummet before an eventual turnaround. However, this was not taken into consideration during the termination process.

This targeted reps, managers, and SCG for numerous franchises.

The aftermath of this layoff has left remaining employees feeling uneasy and uncertain about their own job security. Many are questioning if they will be next on the chopping block, especially if they have received a poor rating in the past.

This sudden mass layoff has also damaged employee morale and loyalty towards the company. Some employees feel betrayed by JnJ. They put in years of hard work and dedication, only to be let go without warning.

Overall, this mass layoff has caused significant ripple effects within JnJ and beyond. It serves as a reminder that no employee should hold any loyalty to JnJ.

I agree with you. Employment is "At-will", however. Also, does it matter if there was a PIP in place when severance is offered? I don't think so. The reverberations locally will be felt for a while - no doubt.
Clearly the decisions are made based on spreadsheets in a cubicle somewhere with no input from DMs and RBDs who may know what is happening in the territories. (Maybe in conjunction with the XWM lead who admitted she had no idea what we do in the field?) Loyalty is not a column on said spreadsheet. Neither is being a valuable resource to entire regions. Neither is knowing your product better than anyone else. Neither is responding "yes" to every last minute request from your DM and RBD for last minute ride-alongs. Neither is being a valuable resource to key customers.
Always have your resume' updated. Avoid getting too comfortable. Check your options within and outside of JNJ regularly. Interview periodically to stay sharp.

Since the FTC ruled non competes are illegal, JnJ has gotten creative.

You are fired,,we don’t owe you any severance package. However, if you sign this sign this non compete as a terminated and former employee we will pay you a severance.

I am interviewing for a role and was told the rep left because of performance. I was also told the territory was currently in the top 10%. What the heck happened? How many were let go? I wasn't given the impression is was a big layoff. At a former employer of mine they had something similar where folks with two low performance years were canned with no notice. It ruined morale.

Janssen fired people with a low rating from last year. Some of these people were 20+ years with JnJ, multiple p-club winners, and currently ranked in the top 10% for 2024. Managers and reps included. Moving forward, our competitors are actually each other. Since we are forced ranked against team memebrs this determines our job security. I don't need to beat Skyrizi, I just need to beat people I work with.

That could be illegal as the non compete was signed under duress.

I was told about 50 ish people across the org were impacted. Does that number sound right? My current company force ranks and the environment it creates is nasty. Everyone is out for themselves. It's not the vibe I'm getting for the position I'm looking at though. The people and culture seem great.

Thanks for playing HR troll. We see you.
